Our cars must be twins both born on 4/02/72 and both engine numbers starting with 104***  :spoton:

^^^ :) .....  John,  I no longer have that engine unfortunately...  it was gone when I bought the car, it now has what I was told at the time of purchase, and supported by info provided on here, an engine from a 200 "Bathurst Series" car.   and if so, not a bad second option..  my engine now is JP 216*** completed on or about 7/9/72 ..

Wonder how many people have JP blocks from other cars ??   or how many engines are left of the 3300 or so, that were supposed to have been built??   some type of JP engine register would be interesting ..    :wedgie:

In the 80's and early 90's JP's and NP's were everywhere. Without really looking I found a JP in a Toyota Dyna that was dumped at a scrap yard (removed with 9" grinder), an NP in a HJ wagon at a wreckers that was ready to go into the crusher and another JP sitting under a bench at a mechanical workshop. Typically anywhere from $20 to $100 purchase price. There must have been a high attrition rate, many more must have gone to scrap metal heaven.

I wonder how many forum members have the original block from other forum members cars. Set up a register boys and start trading them so they can be reunited with the correct shell.

Really makes you wonder why so many engines were removed from cars, blown engines, V8 conversions. At car shows every second or third "XU1" has a QL or other motor fitted. Then there is the fleet of restamps, and the genuine XU1 with JP blocks, not really knowing if they are the right for their car. I think if you own an XU1 with the original donk then your a lucky buggar. :-)).

One reason may be they were considered worthless rusted out heaps and stripped for spare parts.

Or crashed. Even though cars today are more powerful, compared to roads, brakes, tyres and chassis technology the hipo early 70's Aussie cars were way more powerful (or dangerous/unpredictable) with those other factors in the equation.

I for one know that if my old XU1 is still around it will have a QL engine in it, as I blew the original JP engine to pieces. It was JP216959 in a metallic Lime green XU1. I replaced the engine with engine QL 83215 but the XU1 Head went back on the car. Last seen at RAAF Wagga in the early 1980's

when i bought my GTR  there was two factors in the purchase - colour and original motor - the rest of the car was a shocker and in bits.

the race car has a QL block now.

Unless you " roll your own" there not making them blocks anymore with the correct stamped identification.

I question for crabba - was there any identification on the GTR blocks  ?

Hi Grant
Would be good to know what the single number is on the side of your original GTR block(exhaust side)I have heard on the vine that LJ GTR original blocks we're suppose to have an 8 and XU1 blocks a 3 only????
But it seems this theory as some to be inconsistent.

Cheers Dane.

I'd be surprised if GTR's had anything special Dane, they are simply a HQ/HG engine with a different sump hence the different engine number prefix (J instead of Q) and later on they were identical to the optional 202 in other LJ. Lots of them may have had the same markings as they were probably done in batches as compared to HQ engines they are a very small % of the 202 build especially early on where GTR was the only LJ to get a 202.

Hi Dane,

Does the "3" on the XU1's cover LC XU1's as well?

Cheers Brian
