are you sure that's a v8 starter motor ? looks exactly the same as a v6 one I put in a car not long ago , the bolt holes would be slightly closer together if it is .

I think so . It looks like the other V8 starters I've looked at. Do you know the centre to centre measurement of the holes for the six cylinder one.

V6/V8 starters
the holes on dirty old factory thing are about 1mm wider (outside to outside) than the V6,might be just a bit of wear over the years?
The main difference is the snout and how far the gear throws out.

I have investigated this as well as I can and from a OEX catalogue you can actually interchange the V6( Auto only) and V8 starters on the VN. I looked at a OEX starter for a 308 today and they are now selling the flat faced ones(no nose cone). The VN V8 is just like mine. EunUCH from those picture you have posted I am assuming that the dirty one is a 304 one or is it out of a 308. It actually looks like what I need because then it will not throw out so far. The only problem I have is having the solenoid on the side . I don't think I can fit it into the car without hitting the extractors.

I have no idea what the dirty one is off because i grabbed it off a bloke who didn't need it...and he didn't know what it was off either.
It is a 1.3 HP thing,it is slightly larger in diameter than the 1 HP ones so possibly off a 308?..if there was a difference between 253/308 starters?
The snouts are the same length but a different shape and bolt up no problems.
bit of a long shot i know, but i am just wondering if there is not some sort of pitch difference in the ring gear teeth these days depending where they were made that might cause the described problem??... by the the sounds of it others have used one or the other starter without a problem....bit hard to check i know but what does the mesh pattern look like between the bendix gear and ring gear?

that is something I haven't looked at and I'm not sure how to measure it. Its the throw out that I think is the problem and that's why I think the older one looks better for my situation. Does the older one throw out less distance than the newer starter you have?

It maybe unrelated but the v6 one i replaced was a oex one and it did lose teeth (maybe my fault......well probably my fault )
Before the oex starter the car was always slow at cranking until one day it stopped working .
I replaced it with a oex one and it lasted about a week , when i took it was missing a tooth so i took it back and got a new one .
It lasted about another week before it stopped working , took it out and it was missing half the teeth and also had ripped teeth of the flex plate .
Started to look at the car properly and had found out it had a blown head gasket (car sitting for most of the week) .
i dont know if it was starter at fault , but up till then I've never had no problems with a starter motor with a blown head gasket .

Sorry Troy but I don't think a blown head gasket should affect the starter. Wouldn't it have less compression to turn over? What transmission did you have and more importantly did you have a after market flexplate fitted.

yep number 1 piston was full of coolant
standard 4l60e and stock flexplate

Ok gents just to finish off. I bought a secondhand starter out of a 308 and it sounded better but it only lasted a few turnovers and it shit itself. So I bit the bullet and bought a Bosch 5 litre starter for the car. Next time I'll know and will not settle for cheap again. The Bosch doesn't have that whining noise I mentioned earlier, it sounds like a normal starter should . The position of the solinoid on the 5 litre means much more clearance from the exhaust and so less heat as well. It turns the motor over much faster than the OEX and I couldn't be happier with it. So the car is finally running again and that means I can get the exhaust fitted. And get it tuned because its needs to idle smoother.
