How much paint is required for a three stage metallic paint for a hatchback, inside & out, engine bay.

Barring primers which will vary on the body condition, you will need between 4 and 6 litres of color and 3lt of clear or thereabouts.

Variance in the basecoat quantities comes down to actual color, some are real opaque and some are real translucent.

A bit more detail for you Bomber

The Torry will all prepped & ready to roll into the booth & with the colour I've chosen it would require 3 coats of basecoat, 3 coats of colour & 3 of clear.

ill be getting a few quotes so knowing the approx quantity would be good.

Cheers Aaron

Disclaimer: I've never used any of that 3 stage stuff.

I'd think you'd need 4ltrs of base coat, 4lts of colour and 5 or 6ltrs of clear to do it with the coats you've mentioned.

Not the floor or the underside.... Everything else will be painted including the bars

I gave VG auto paints a call the sarvo to get a quote on paint only & the guy I spoke to for a price passed me onto another bloke who is a painter, he told me I would need
4 lt of basecoat, 2 lt of colour & 4 lt of clear for the colour I'm doing the Torry. Transferred back to the guy for a price $470 Concept paints brand.
I'll be calling The paint place at Hornsby tomorrow for a quote on DuPont paint & will get a few quotes on different brands.

What other good brands of paint is there besides PPG & HOK I should consider

frOck that is cheap!

Does it include thinners/reducer and hardener?

I've had success with De Beers, Lesonal (Wattyl system)

That's what I thought Daz.....for the paint only, all thinners, reducers & hardener will be provided by my mates smash repairs.

Wow. Cheap as chips. I know nothing about the product though so seek advice first.

The base coat I used last was a metallic and was $300 for 4ltrs, clear was about the same for 5ltrs.
Hardener and reducer on top of that. That was the Lesonal stuff. Last time I used De Beers it was about the same.

I'm no painter though so shops can prolly get it way cheaper than I can.

Thanks Daz, I'll check out De Beers & Lesonal tomorrow

Mate who owns the smash repairs brother in law owns a paint joint but I'm not sure as yet to what brand paint he supplies, I'm sure it's not a shit product & should get a good price, even bust out the old barter system....lol

The more I know of what I want & need is all for the better.

Cheers Aaron

i used 4 lts of black base coat 7.5lts of colors 4 lts of clear for my car.

all up $1800ish for it all with hardener and  reducer in Baslac,,

depending on the gun used to spray it can depend on the amount of paint needed also. some will transfer paint with a lot less waste in the air..

A lot of different volumes of basecoat & candy or colour used, I guess it all depends on the colour and how transparent they are

Awesome paint on your Hatch Jason did you paint it yourself ??

yep from ground up was all my own work. only thing i didnt do in this build was the roof lining and back seat trimmed to match the front..

and engine internals.

base coat was only 2 coats to get full black base coat.

car color is a mix of blue purple chameleon ,magic red candy, electric blue candy. all powders mixed with a binder coat..

engine bay is debeer harlequin, as well as my window mylars and side chrome strips that are now not chrome.

yes i know true candy is not a powder, they where just the names of the powders..

With the top major brands PPG, House of Kolor, DuPont, And others like De Beers, Lesonal...( Wattyl system ) & Lesonal that I haven't heard of before.
Are there any other paint brands I should consider using....??

All recommendations and opinions appreciated

The more you look the more confusing it will become.
I used baslac for my car. I find it really good to work with.

Find something in your budget range and just go with it would be my opinion.
