I bought a QL block and the block had a X stamped before the QL

the bore is standard.

the stamped X  is  out of line and is deeper than the standard holden offering numbers

Any ideas on this.

If the block was stripped naked that might explain the X

Yep, July '76 onward red 202 with auto trans only, the cast date should confirm.

Guessing XQL8010xx should be around September/October '76?

I don't know why but for some reason GMH used Holden engines in auto LX 6cyl ADR27A Toranas, whereas the manual 6cyl ADR27A Toranas got Torana engines.

The X was stamped in the assembly plant to denote it was going in a Torana rather than a Holden. The rest of the number was stamped at the engine plant at Fisherman's Bend. It was done at the same time and for the same reason that a Statesman engine was stamped with 11 or 12 - to denote it was in a Statesman rather than a Holden.
