If you're running no centre console and you're start from scratch with a gearbox/shifter (T56/TKO/Toploader/T5/W58 etc. - something that Holden never put in an old car) what recommendations do you have for a shifter boot?

Anyone have good photos of what they've done/what they've seen? Need something that'll seal out the under-car smells & noises a bit, and look good on the inside of the car, and also attach gracefully to a floor with nothing but carpet around it.

Photos of good setups would be good, but even better would be seeing what they look like pulled apart, product links? how they mount up and so on.

Have a look at what GMH did with 4spd in HK-HG ute and van. These sit on a boss though and are the only floor shift on any of these apart from early in HK there was also a floor shift setup on HK Belmont sedan and wagon where there was a little round boot with a round HR style shifter.

The only other floor option that I can think of is what a HQ-HZ commercial had with bucket seats - these had a straight stick (not bent like a bench seat car). Lots of the HX-HZ commercials had console shift 4spd though, it was HQ-HJ where there was no console shift for commercials outside of Sandman so finding images will be hard. Have a look at L34 as well.

i made up mine by heating up some 4mm perspex and bending it to shape to match the floors profile done in 2 pieces.

also a universal shifter boot from ebay cut to the length i wanted,

all trimmed and finished with no screws showing at all,,

where the bolt is in my pic goes through both pieces into a nutsert on a metal bracket the attaches to the transmission tunnel.

as they are round in a sence no need for anymore than one bolt, it doesnt move or slide around at all..

just 1 small slit in the shifter boot to access where the bolt is..

if that makes any sense?

i dont have a photo of it finished but if you want to see it let me know and ill go out and photo it for you..

^ That's what I'd do, period look and the surround looks fine just screwed down with stainless screws

To help with sealing things, maybe think about running a smaller inner boot and then a nicer outer boot?  I know here back when at least some cars had a rubber boot that would seal moisture and what not (that was sort of flat)  then the larger boot over top.

I have a console, but I run 2 boots as well.. I picked up an SFI approved boot that is like fire and everything resistant (believe it has nomex in it as well as a foil-ish inner layer) that I use mounted to the floor itself then used a suede black with red stiching one..just like in the pic above) that I mounted to a trim ring on the console.

Might be a bit over kill but nice to have a good quality boot I figured at least between me and the "outside" and if I hadn't been running a console I would have just left the lower boot as it is and maybe just made a nice aluminum trim ring where it comes through the carpet?  (I attached and sealed the boot to the floor and slide the carpet over the top)

Kinda see it a bit in the this shot too..

I did this on The Truckster.

A generic rubber boot from Spectrum Rubber for about 20 bucks and a 3mm stainless plate that I plasma cut and drilled a few holes in.

Jeff makes a good point about stopping a potential under-car fire from getting inside the cabin, makes sense although seems rarely done by the manufacturers.

Dual boots seems common though in the OE,  know the 6 speed late model Camaro my drivetrain came from, along with the one I owned and drove for a couple years... use a rubber lower boot and leather (or leather-ish,lol)  upper.

Probably overkill on my car, but what the heck...8 piston Brembos are overkill too but that didn't stop me..ha ha.

I like the Lokar design with a bezel that seals the boot to the shifter.  If you only want the book part way up the sifter you can use an o-ring bezel.

I would also use a rubber boot on the inside.

Check out the L34 option too. I know the 1900 opel LHs had that similar 70s look. Rubber rectangular design.

If 8 piston Brembos don't stop you, you have problems!

I was always intending to double bag that rod that I regularly have my hand on.

The car already had this in it, and it's not awful but thought there may be some good ideas other people had seen. It bolts down obviously but the carpet actually tucks in over the bolted flange neatly. I may just keep it, as the new gearbox lines up with the old hole beautifully. But probably put something else over the top as well, once I find something I really like the look of.

This is what mine above came out like finished. Not everyone's cup of tea but is what I wanted. No metal ring of bolts showing..
