i am about to build my own car trailer, my plan is to put expanded mesh on the trailer and use these tie downs over the tyre .

would this be a satisfactory tie down method .

cheers Rodney                                   http://www.ebay.com....ip=true&rt=nc

might need to scroll down to see the straps i want

Thats pretty much the way they are set up on the flatbed I sometimes borrow

Just make sure you always use them on all 4 wheels and don't get lazy

Nice Straps Rodney,

and the expanded Mesh idea keeps the trailer weight down.   :spoton:

Fairly easy to weld some round bar directly below the mesh for added tie down strength......

No way in frOcking hell would I just hook it through the mesh like they have done there.

Definitely cut a square of the mesh out and put a roundbar or bit of pipe underneath it tieing in between the chassis members.

Apart from that, yeah all good.

I have been pondering this type for a while as they would suit my trailer as it exists a bit better:

Look to easy....

Best to do it properly, as DJ's link shows.

I have been in an accident as a passenger,

where the goose-neck snapped off the trailer and the toe-bar ripped from the car,

and the racing car was hanging off the side of the trailer 20 metres away.

Telegraph-poles are bad.  :furious:

Not sure I'm happy with the way the 1st straps are attached, better arrangement here.

chain around the diff and proper wheel straps on the front, is how we do it on the truck,

Must have FOUR separate tie downs that's by law, so a strap each wheel,

most of the time we have a proper wheel strap on each wheel (2points) which rope (1) and chain around the diff which is another 2, slots cut in the tray so when can use one chain but it acts like 2

Hello Danny,

Chain around the Diff works a treat,

but what about painted diff show cars,

would they need link points added extra?

Really? Are you sure? First I have heard of this, does it apply with car trailers as well?

Sounds like horse shit to me.

I run with 3 often.
1 on each front wheel and 1 wrapped around the diff to each side.

happy to be corrected...but you see those new car transporter trucks with say 6 cars on them, they only seem to strap 1 front and the diagonal one on the rear?

Not saying that it ideal, but its pretty public if it aint right?

p.s I have no idea what the law is re this.

I quiet frequently tie cars down with two straps even...

This is the national guidelines...

Finally....

9.7.3.3 Direct lashing method Direct lashings are attached to axles, suspension or lashing points. They should be angled at 25 degrees to the horizontal to minimise bouncing and within 30 degrees of the centreline of the carrying vehicle. A minimum of two lashings must be used and arranged so that, when tensioned, a downward force is applied to each wheel. Recovery winches should not be used for restraining loads, unless they are fitted with a positive locking mechanism. They cannot be used for tie-down unless they are tensioned to pull down on one end of the vehicle at a minimum of 25 degrees (1:2) or to give an equivalent force of 20% of the weight on the axle at that end.

Says you need to use two straps.

Bomber,

Read again, it says a "Minimum" of two.

More detailed in fine print about being restrained in all directions and breaking capacity of straps and shackles etc.

Your point being?

It was stated you legally needed to use four straps. Some of us were unsure of that.

We found a docco, And I found the appropriate area that says no, no you do not legally need to use four straps.

The rest should be blatantly obvious...But sometimes I forget that we have to pander to vegetables on this forum.

Cheers.

I have two x big U-bolts welded to the trailer's draw bars and I use a 3500kg ratchet strap on each of these around the lower control arms. There is a hole in the trailer floor at the rear that goes either side of one of the floor's main 50x50 crosswise chassis rails, and I put a 3500kg ratchet strap through it and around the diff housing. I do the fronts up first then use the rear one to pull back against the fronts.

glad to be corrected, I guess I got the 4 separate points from being around tow trucks with TT plates almost my whole life,, they might be different

as always id rather over kill with safety than under kill

I use four points to tie down, load must be restrained in all directions.

Rope is useless can not get enough tension, Chains with a dog and bar to get the tension are good but chip paint and can crush brake pipes if you are not carefull.

I am now using the over wheel straps (3500kg) so I don't have to get underneath the car.

Have been pulled over twice in the last 18 month to have the loading checked. (The officer could see a loose bit of chain he said.)

I hope this is of help to some, I know some have little idea, ie put car on backwards.

Has anyone used these on flared Torana's, is there enough clearance from the strap to the flare?

Rodney,

No pictures at this time, my trailer is a bit of a dogs breakfast, started as a speedway trailer and been modified as needed.

I have 12mm round bar bent into a 75mm u 140mm length and welded vertical on outside rail at each corner, top is 60mm up off deck. Plus two across front of deck.

Have 3 x 3.5 ton d shackles welded to top outside rail down each side, square to rail, bolt to outside. total of five points down each side.

Middle of deck is 100 mm square mesh its only to stop things falling thru,I do use chain looped around the cross bracing down the middle to hold odd shaped machinery at times.
