Hi there,

I cant find much info on here although if there is a thread, please point me in the right direction.

I would like to get rid of the wiper motor from the factory location, and weld up the holes for that clean look.

What have other people done here?

Is there a really small wiper motor off another car that can fit under the scuttle panel area that I can just mount without too much hassle?

Ideally, if I could find one that i could mount on the lower rear of the scuttle panel area, with just a few holes to mount it without having to do any cutting and welding would be perfect.

Any pictures or info would be very helpful!!!

There is lslxhatch's web site:
http://ls2lxhatch.com/wipers.htm

And I think maybe Dirtbag did something with his brother's hatch?

I did similar to LS2LXhatch did, I bought the same kit but only ended up using the motor and I already had a wiper motor here from a Camry I think it was which I was going to do the same sort of thing with.  At least I have a brand new motor now but I reckon the other one would have worked fine.

I think M@ is talking about a cable-drive wiper kit, CAE sells one for Toranas here:

And for all other applications:

Matt and I used a universal cable drive wiper kit from Specialty Power Windows with a Dynamic Park motor and 2 speed wiper switch with adjustable delay.

The first version I made used the cable drive but I was not happy with the sweep so I tossed the cable drive and made new linkages. The photos on my website show the completed cable drive system and the prototype linkage drive system. The linkage drive system is better than the cable drive system. Matt and I have the linkage drive setup.

The dynamic park motors have a braking system to stop the motor in the same position every time. The standard wiper motor has a dead spot in the circuit and rely on the friction of the wipers to stop the motor in the dead area.

The Specialty Power Windows website is terrible.

I think this is the kit I used. Just double check it has a dynamic park motor and you can choose between the two speed switch WWK-2 or the two speed switch with delay WWK-21.

WWK-21 Wiper Kit with intermittent switch (two speed and adjustable delay).

You may also want to order 5/8" knurls (The splined  knob the wiper arm attaches to) for the wiper pivots. You don't need them if you use the linkage drive setup with the factory Torana wiper posts. They will come in handy though if you decide to make new wiper posts or want to use the cable system.

Make sure you hit the refresh button to get the latest version of the wiper page.

Another forum member's version from a few years ago...

Here you go Baz,
Used the smallest wiper motor i could find that had a similar operating mechanism as the torana one(used a F--d laser one). Mounted it behind the firewall in the plenum chamber directly behind where the original one sits in a bracket i made up. Had to trim the inside of the plenum chamber a little but this won't affect how it works. Had to modify the actuating arms to suit, bent one arm and made a whole new other one. Wired it into the original wiring loom. (a little tricky as the laser motor also runs intermittent speed but this doesn't work in my setup) Ran the wires through the plenum chamber as well as the windscreen washer squirters and mounted them so they squirt up through the cover grille. I did all of this with the windscreen still in place so i could check it's operation.

Wow, thats an amazing looking kit !!!

I might try a Laser or similar motor and see if I can work out that set-up.

The only thing I don't really like the thought of is drilling a hole through the inner-plenum right below the upper-plenum drain hole, you'd have to be sure you rustproofed it and sealed it up well, I could see that leaking water after a few years? (Confucius say "Wife with wet feet not likely to be impressed")

I think I'd prefer to mount the motor as M@ and LS2LXhatch did, then it looks like you could swap the pivots left to right and pretty much use the standard linkages?

My philosophy is to use as much of the standard equipment as possible, that way if the pivots or links ever flog-out a thousand miles from home, you have half a chance of getting parts to fix it?

You can't swap the pivots as they have different lever arm lengths so they sweep a different arc across the screen to each other.  I just used the original pivots and made new linkages.  I could maybe have kept the standard linkage between the 2 pivots, but it is pretty close between the 2 rod ends on the LH side pivot now so the standard linkage may not have fit nicely.

The standard linkages and pivots on my wipers were worn to the point where they needed to be replaced anyhow.

Thanks for the pictures guys,

Heres what I ended up doing-

I used a VY Commodore Wiper Motor, and I just welded a bolt to the middle linkage and cut and shut the long linkage and connected it.

Photos from the original post are long gone (probably hosted on photobucket), but as luck would have it, looks like I saved them at the time...

Here is how it came out.

Still works perfectly, although I don't drive the car in the rain if possible. Washers work fine as well.
