Hi folks, was wondering if anyone can help me confirm the identity of this engine. Can anyone tell from these photos if these manifolds, carby, etc, are all original 186S? Not sure if the head is original and I only have these photos to go by.

Wrong manifold and carby.

HKTG sump.

Yel will know the ins and outs more accurately than that.

So in theory it could have come out of a HK GTS Monaro.

Without seeing the engine number it could have come out of almost any HK-HG. For Australian sale 186S was optional in HK on any model except Brougham and GTS327 and in all HT-HG 6cyl models.

FYI, apart from external differences there is no major differences between 186S and 186 that would actually matter that much today. Yes originally they used on old pre 1967 forged crankshaft, stronger valve springs and better main bearings but most of that apart from the crankshaft would probably be gone long ago. Some 186S had a different camshaft and heavier exhaust valves to their respective 186 but a lot of normal 186 used the same valves and/or camshaft as 186S.

Never understood why people cover engine numbers.

If your looking at something like this for your uc its a complete woftam.

Either clean up the engine you have now or find a complete blue/black motor to put into it.

The 3.3L black even came out in the VK Calais with EFI which produced 27 more horses out of the box and was more economical to drive. But hey, why stop there because a couple of years later the VL arrived with a 3L engine that was even more economical and delivered an additional 21 ponies or 59 ponies for the gastropod mollusc version.

Yeah but fitting rb30 engines to toranas is a leading cause of gaymantitis.

Dollar for dollar your a lot better off sticking to a carby blue?black engine sub about 400hp, so in the case of swapping stock engines you will be lightyears ahead.

Cheers.

Considering the car's stock engine was a Sh*tFire4 and that a previous owner installed a 173, this will never be a matching numbers vehicle. Any engine swaps or modifications can only improve the value of the vehicle even if it's a Japanese engine with a Holden cam cover. Whilst I like 202s the basic design has been around since the late '60s and power is more limited. This RB30 did 810hp on the dyno, and whilst I don't need anywhere near that much power, it's still impressive.

If you are chasing decent, reliable hp you'd be better off with an LS1, or if you want to do it on a budget an injected 5L out of a VN/VQ/VG to VSIII with a TH350. Or to do it really cheap keep it a mild-warm 6 as Bomber says.

If you wanna do an engine swap and stick to six in a row look no further than a ba onwards xr6-t engine.

Hands down will flog any of the common jap engines.

Nah just posted that video as an example of the engine's potential. Really just after something economical, with decent power/response, and a nice note for a daily/cruiser.

You'll get all that out of an injected 5.0L. You'll also get it (minus the nice note) from a VN-VS V6 but it'll cost more for the conversion.

I guess what becoming confusing is this post started as pictures of 186 and on another post you talked about carb problems
So really you need to work which way you wish to go!

1 keep the vehicle in an original form and stick to a period correct six or 8
Here some good advise has been offered, that is a blue 3.3 warmed up , about the cheapest option
Move to an 8 and fit injected VN etc

2 move to a totally different power plant , then the cost is only as fat as your wallet

^ agree,or fix the carb problem and get it drive-able for now and work out which way you wish to go and get a bit of a plan (parts etc.) together on which way you wish to go.

most will go for an 8 or inline six , or as already said you could go V6 and lose the note ...but with a V6 that has a decent muffled single exhaust and an "unmuffled" induction you won't hear the exhaust note over the the induction noise anyway ?...

Also keep in mind that fuel is relatively cheap....

Unless you do 50,000km a year spending 5k doing an engine swap to get 2L/100km better fuel economy will take a long, long time to pay itself off.

Cheers.
