HOW TO REBUILD A LC HEATER BOX..

Hi all.. Just me..

Thought youd like to see a complete heater box rebuild..

 

Pics tell the story.. sorry its a double post, posted in my rebuild as welll.

Black paint is POR 15.. more rust protection the better.. over the zinc.

forget.

had the heater core tested.. alls good there.

gr8 as usual Mike, quick querie, you have the black wire going to the fan wire and red one going to the chassis, is that how they go? just bought one myself and would like to test it, T.I.A

There is an extension lead on the motor.. pic is decieving.

if u look there are two plugs inside the case.. one is for neg and the other is for pos... doesnt matter which way to test but have to get right on assembly to run correct way.

The motor itself is isolated form any current and only connected via the two plugs

Great work as usual Mike.Just wanted to know where you bought the foam for you're heater box, is it a special type?

Clark Rubber.. The open pored foam is AIRCONDITIONER foam and the gaskets are as close a match as I could get to the original gaskets.. dont get the really heavy rubber, go for the lighter 6mm one as it compressors better..

Do you seal the rubber with anything when fitting the box back in the car, Mike?

I havnt got that far yet..

Ive pulled a few of these cars apart and as far as I can tell..Originally there was no extra sealer on the rubbers.. Ill probally just use a bit of the strip caulk on the vent in only.. and ALL bolts/screws, etc..

Hi Mike

 

Probably a trivial thing but with all the Heater boxes you have done have you seen any markings on them?(date codes and some sort of inspection code)

 

I have seen a few different types whether they were made at different places or not who knows??

 

A couple of pics of 2 different ones I have seen.

Dane,

 

do you recon that this mark is an " engine bay inspection date" or a completion date on assembly line ?

 

It just seems weird that you would stamp a heater box as it's just a component of the engine.

 

could it be that the " total of all the other marks in the engine bay " result in this final  stamp ?

 

just a thought - i have absolutely no evidence of this

Only marks I seen were some texta in black on the inside of the LJ one, cant remember what it was. Ill look next time I open as it needs sealing...

No white writing, then again the heater boxes I fixed were pretty weathered...

I would be assuming that theses marking and date codes would of been stamped on there prior to fitting and installing to the car, each component that's in the engine bay for example sake has their own date code to when they were made not fitted to the car.

 

Just my thoughts

Question, did you buy new fixings? Referring mainly to the 3 long Coach bolts. If so where did your purchase? I’ve had a hard time trying to find them. Bolt places tell me I won’t have any luck. Will need the clips too.

Inspection date was done on final inspection of vehicle that's why the stamp is upside down.
