Righto
202 specs unknown but has some work ie cam, mild port by the looks.
Mechanical oil pressure gauge says 22-24 psi at idle hot.(electrical said 15psi)
Running gtx oil
At idle it rattles its tits off (900rpm). rev till its up to 1050-1100rpm the rattle is gone.
Now it sounds like it's coming from the lifters.
Its not the top end.
No rattle at all until it warms right up

Lifters or the bottom end bearings?
Runs really well and doesn't use any oil at all.

I wouldnt worry to much.

Is it a hydraulic or solid cam/lifters?

It probably has anti pump up lifters.

They are the devils work.

If you want spend $100 or so throwing some new non anti pump up lifters in there.

Cheers.

Have you oiled the distributor lately?

Not to state the obvious but does the oil pressure drop away to nothing at idle?

EDIT: Sorry disregard, should've read the whole post instead of skimming.

There is a felt wick in the dizzy shaft (under the rotor button). It is supposed to be given a couple of drops of engine oil every once in a blue moon :)

The noise made by the mechanical advance gear can be mistaken for many different problems.

The PCV valve can make a bloody big rattle sometimes.  Pull the PCV out of the rocker cover and stick your finger over the hole and it will drop the revs a lot but it will tell you if that is the rattle. My 173 LH rattles  at idle, and I have tried 3 or 4 PCV's but they all rattle.  Just gotta keep the revs up. :)

 regards,Rod.

It shouldn't rattle at idle - it should be pulled hard against its seat if everything is in good shape and in tune. But if the cam overlap is too much to keep it firmly "closed" at idle then it's better to swap out the pcv for a fixed orifice. The engine will idle better and drive much more smoothly at small throttle openings.

All bog standard johnno. Tried new ones , old ones, all rattle.

What size fixed apperture would you suggest?

It is really no big deal, the thing runs as sweet as a nut.

You could try a bit more initial advance Rod. A stock engine really shouldn't be rattling the PCV unless it's tired or out of tune.

Try this, at idle, while rattling, pull the dipstick out a bit. Just a thought.

Had an odd one with a  202 where someone had done a home job on putting new foam in the breather in the air cleaner for the PCV, was sucking the gutts out of the sump and made a rattle sound from the sump.

Removed foam stuffing and noise was gone.

Yeah, the air valves in my XU1 carbs do that too if the idle speed is set to low.

My father's torana used the make a chugging noise especially whilst idling.
Turned out to be the bearing in the alternator so take the fan belt off and see if the noise is still there.
My sister named the car chitty chitty bang bang and the name has stuck!

Tired certainly describes my 202.

Cylinders 1 - 4 have compression around 150, 5 and 6 are around 120.

Remove the PCV and cover the end with a finger gives a good column of smoke from the rocker cover.
