Hi guys

I have a LC torana which came with a trimatic gearbox and I have recently aquired and Aussie 4 speed box and want to swap it over.

How hard is the conversion and is it worth it? I'm pretty sure I have all the peices for the conversion so any information on how to do it would be

greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I've never had an auto car and therefore haven't had to do the swap myself.

But one little thing that would be easy to forget about is the manual spigot bush for the back of the crank (different to Trimatic) if you don't know that already. Removing spigot bushes takes some time, read up on the method before you do it (I would suggest an appropriately sized rod and some wet newspaper). The rest should be quite straight forward if you have the correct pedal arrangement. I don't even know what clutch actuation an LC/LJ uses but plenty of others on here will be able to tell you and confirm you've got the right bits if you have questions (photos help too).

Is it worth it? God yes. If you enjoy driving and have fully working legs, then lose the Trimatic ASAP.

Thanks Heath

The origainal plan was to keep it auto but I picked up a complete engine (with yella terra head) and aussie 4 speed for really cheap so why not!

Will definately be a lot more fun to drive!

I'll look into the spigot bush.

I'll try and post some photos of the parts I have so someone can tell me if I have what I need

Hello Mark,

the pedal pivot frame is already ready for the clutch pedal too,

just take the big auto brake pedal off,

and put the two manual pedals in.

Done this a few times myself.  B)

Caution - make sure the brakes work before driving off.

Hi Mark ...you could sell or swap the auto kickdown bracket and cable, loom to auto shifter to me :)  once you have everything

for the conversion if you would like to ..... have been looking for those parts to do my conversion

I  have the manual pedal box complete with spring and that other thing that goes in the spring to clutch

   Cheers

Trimatic to Aussie 4 speed must be one of the easiest gear box conversions I've ever done.

As above, if keeping your current auto engine you will need a new spigot bush for the rear of the crank.

If you have an engine/gearbox combo ready to go in it really is just plug and play.

All wires/cables/shafts/crossmembers etc are the same trimatic/aussie.
Hardest bit really is fitting the clutch pedal and mechanism.

That would be fantastic mate .was it floor shift by the way...was thinking just after i wrote maybe she's column she should have

the original insulation rubbers that go on ends of xmember i would be interested in aswell.i cant see them in my parts book but im sure it would have them.

Manuals have these steel  little plates there instead.someone might put a pic up of them for you.

HI ya Mark...

I did this conversion to my LC and its an easy swap... What clutch set up are you planning to run?

My LC was a column shift auto but it had a plate on the floor tunnel so the hole was already there.... I just removed the insulation rubbers Maz mentioned and added washers where needed....

Cheers

yep... good call..... Im just doing that to mine now, getting ready for the new engine...... has been great on the highway but very sluggish around town with the 2.78....

I ended up putting in 3.36 and giving the whole rear end a freshen up.... new bushes, clean and paint...

Pretty sure, that when the Cam is on,

we use more Fuel.

Could be wrong,

but I have found the Motor to be more efficient off the Cam at Highway speed.  :D

which is good for the cam

You will need the pin that mounts into the dash panel pedal box brace for the clutch pedal over centre spring. Auto's do not have this pin fitted from factory. There is a special retaining clip (not shown) that fits onto the left hand end of the pin.

Gday all I am after one of springs with the retaining pin and the pin at the bottom too. Any ideas on where I might track one down?

Do you need the spring for the cable clutch conversion?
