Hi guys, I've searched through my manuals and photos everywhere but can't seem to find one that gives me the mounting position for my heater tap. Its a 76 LX SLR5000 308 and its a cable operated. If anyone could share a photo it would be most helpful.

Cheers

No heater tap.
The heater core always has hot water flowing through it. The hot cold cable operates the lever which exposes the heater core to the air stream.

Cheers LS1, So would that mean the one that was fitted to the old heater hoses shouldn't be there ? Its an air con model if that makes any difference...

The cars with factory air did have a tap to turn off the heater. See page 421 of the LX Torana Parts Catalogue.

If it's factory air the tap sits inline with the hose up against the passenger side rocker cover, but you mention cable operated, the factory air one is vacuum operated.

It's sounds to me like an aftermarket integrated air cond system, something like an AMC or similar.

A cable-operated inline heater tap is added as part of the system, when they fit the air cond. Being aftermarket it was fitted wherever the fitter thought it would be the easiest or look neat.

Its position is not critical, as long as it's adjusted correctly.

Cheers guys,

Yeh hard for me to know if its after market or not... All the interior items look factory but then I don't have the info of Factory to after market differences. Was thinking it may have been changed to a cable because someone had put a 750 Holley on it but again I don't have enough of the cars history to know exactly. This car hasn't been on the road for over 20 years and back then we just did whatever we wanted.

Ls2 - I'm having trouble downloading the catalogue... Is there another way I can get it ?

The link is working for me. The file is 18 MB which is too big for many email accounts. If you want me to try sending it to your email then send me a pm.

Very easy to tell if factory or aftermarket, the factory looks just like a non aircon car, it uses the same vents, the heater control panel is slightly different , it will have a 4 speed fan. Aftermarket generally will have a unit mounted under the dash witht the vents on it.

Not so, that is an underdash air con unit that you are talking about.

In the 70s there were several companies who built aftermarket INTEGRATED air con systems, which looked very much like factory air con.

The AMC system, which we used to fit, had the evaporator (the cold bit) fitted in the intake air duct behind the dash on the extreme LH side. The system used the normal heater/demister fan to suck the cold air thru the evaporator & blow it out the standard dash vents. It did however have a separate thermostat control on the dash facia.

The best why to ID factory a/con is to look for vacuum controls, instead of cable & a control panel with the extra functions included.

Also the AMC system's heater box looks standard if you look under the bonnet, but the factory a/con is very different in that area.

Interesting... Hey Dr Terry, I have attached a photo of the heater/air con parts, are you able to tell from looking at them which system this is ? I'm in the process of trying to find a condenser and a couple of other bits but if this unit wasn't factory/dealer fitted then I probably won't botherAttached File  100_4009.JPG   151.73K   2 downloads

That's not factory aircon it will be a system like dr terry described, never seen one before,I'm guessing that box in your picture is the evaporator that dr terry was describing, the factory air used aVIR and it and the Evap were in the engine bay, if you Google gm VIR aircon you will find some pictures of what it looks like

Yes, that system is an aftermarket integrated unit, basically as I described.

The box on the upper/right is the standard heater/vent unit. The unit on the lower/left is the air con evaporator which is added.

These are not a great system, you are better off with a custom under dash unit.

Thanks Dr Terry... sounds like I'm at the clinic :-) Since its not factory I'm probably not going to bother putting an air con back in.

Cheers for the help
