Has anyone bought an OBD scanner recently.

I was thinking getting one off Ebay, probably with a USB interface to a laptop.

My wife's Astra shows the Engine Check Light at random intervals, and this may help to indicate what bits to replace.

Any comments ????

The cheaper the scanner....................the less it will scan....................just sayin.

Daughter in laws Astra threw a code, forget what it was now, sussed out scan tools at super cheap and it would scan her car but not my VY.

Couldn't see the value?

Ended up having to use my brayn to fix it.

If you've got a spare $6500 the relatively new G-Scan 2 is not a bad bit of kit.

If not, Launch do a fantastic cheap scanner which only deals with emissions related codes, trouble is I've found it only works on most vehicles less than 10 years old.

Turns out there are different versions of the Launch CReader, learn something new every day.

Which is about when OB1kenobi (or what ever that black magic is called) was introduced

I bought a really good looking one off Ebay, in Australia...
Thought I was safe buying local but they sent me one that would not turn On unless it was plugged in..

I recon it was faulty but the seller said it wasn’t..ie: ”it work good you must plug in before work”
So, I asked why the hell do you need to put in a 9 volt battery if it won’t work unless its plugged into your car..

I haven't bought another since and occasionally use my son’s (thousands of dollars worth) unit as he works for the RAC

Try and get a cheap one from your local store so you don’t get the runaround and bullshit involved all the Ebay red tape and with posting it back, if it don’t work right ..
Although you could be lucky and get a good one from Ebay, you never know....

Its a TS Astra 2000 1.8 litre. I tried the "pedal test" and got nothing.

No Engine Check Light for a week now.

When you hear some of the Astra horror stories, this one has done very well.

It has 140k Km on the clock. It still drives very well. Only real problem is peeling Clear Coat, which means it has zero re-sale value.
