Sealing LH LX tail lights

Have fitted the foam gasket supplied and poked it in between the light outer and inner parts.
I think the intention for the gasket is sit between the body and the light assembly so might need put that right which will leave no seal between the inner and outer light parts, is this correct?
Is the foam gasket a good seal or is better to use something else?
Suggestions welcome. Video or pictures more so.
I have had suggested using the same sealing stuff I used on the heater and fan boxes.
This is it here...

They were sealed with a non-hardening sealent. The same stuff the heater box/ bumper brackets & screens were sealed with.

If I recall correctly, originally they had a seal (foamish) to the body.

Ill agree that from factory i thought they had a foam seal.
In saying that i only used non hardening windscreen sealant on mine.
just applied a good amount to both the car and the tail lights then fitted,
I have no leaks at all..

I'm sure the set of NOS tail lights I have in the shed have a foam gasket supplied with them.
It appears that it would fit between the light housing and body of the car,

I didn't use any sealant or anything. As part of my washing/drying ritual of the car, I always remove the taillight to dry any water left in behind the taillight assy. It's a good spot for it to sit.

I haven't washed mine with water since the day I cut and polished it 3 years ago.
Meguiars waterless wash, Body duster, Never drive it in the rain (not hard, it never rains here) and a top quality car cover.
If it doesn't get wet less chance of rusting. Again!

Yeah I'm pedantic like that too
I wash it religiously 3-4 times per year whether it needs it or not, and I only ever drive it in the rain when its raining!
Back on topic, I changed my tail lights not too long ago and the foam seals didn't seem to have caused any adverse effects with the weather etc, and they've seen plenty.

Foam seal, yes, but not like the sponge you wash the car with, its a closed cell type that does not absorb or hold water, so it seals and does not cause rust.

Sounds spot on.

While we are on the topic of sealing. Is there a specific grommet for the number plate light wiring?
Also I would like a black (or paintable) number plate light assembly instead of a chrome one, any suggestions?
Brad is right, if you wash the car a good going over with the compressor air in all those spots before going back in the shed is quick and easy insurance.
