Problem Solvered

Sorry, I know that's not much help, but someone will know what to do.

You'll have a wire missing off the coil I think but I haven't had that problem before.

G'day Neil, welcome to the forum!

The only way that can happen is if power is getting around the ignition switch to the coil somehow, can you give us more info, has the car just been put back together after a rebuild, OEM wiring harness or after market (or home made), has it been on the road and just started doing this etc.?

Isn't there something to do with the wire up from the starter to the coil that can cause this issue? I'm sure I've read on here about putting a diode in the line to stop this.

Rob, from memory that diode install is to do with the alternator charge light wire back feeding power into the main harness thus allowing power flow to the ignition or something to that effect.

don't have themo fans do you, as they can sometimes cause an engine to keep running

Gday  thanks for the help, just to give a bit more info the car it  has been off the road for a couple of years but was fine with the  old engine in it  and nothing has been changed, only the engine , now has 355 stroker. when we first fired up the new engine there was no problem turning it off but once it started doing it it  just got worse and now it wont turn off at all, the car has some original wiring as some home made, so I might just take it to a sparky and get it sorted. I could probably mess about with it for a week and get nowhere and he probably will get it done in a couple of hours. I am  leaning towards ignition switch simply because nothing has been change so I will have a bit of a look at that first, thanks again for you help

next time disconnect the ignition switch may rule it out.

Also try disconnecting the small terminal / wire from the back of the alternator to see if that fixes it? The alternator won't charge with that disconnected but that should rule out the diode-solution above.

And then disconnect the second small terminal off the starter solenoid (if it has one), not the wire that operates the starter, the other small wire that feeds 12v to the coil for starting. Later model starters didn't have this feature though so depending on which starter you're using it may only have the one small terminal.

Did you run out of fuel yet Neil?

Just wondering if you got this fixed or not?

Just been through this with a friend's car. When the alternator is running and the ignition is switched off, it can continue to feed power back through the excite wire. This runs through the tell-tale battery light on the dash and back into the fuse box, and easily supplies enough power to keep a relay latched (so if your ignition system is running via relay it won't turn off). The original setup where the coil was connected directly to the ignition switch (via the resistor wire for ON position) wouldn't keep running so easily with the reduced voltage.

To confirm this is the issue pull the fuse for the tell-tale/backup lights, or remove the excite wire from the alternator. The battery light will stay on and the alternator won't excite but the engine will switch off. If this is the case, install a diode on the alternator excite wire and everything should work as intended.

Make sure when fitting diode the band points towards the alternator. Something rated around 5 amps minimum should be fine.

The band is called the cathode.
