Well.

Probably a premature post, & an unobtainable deadline for me but here goes...

I'm giving myself 10 weeks today to get this car all tarted up & on the road. Why 10 weeks?...meh, well just cos..for now.

Now I'm not renowned for meeting these kinda deadlines with cars/work/etc... I've had this car since March this year & I said (to whoever was listening at the time) I'd get it on the road by Xmas, & I still haven't started cos of life & always other things going on.

Belonged to a mate of mine I met thru crossfit & found out about it when he brought his mint little SSS in one day & mentioned he had a '73 HQ he was contemplating moving on.This is how it sat when I first saw it (and fell in love with it)..

I've always wanted a '73 HQ. Grew up riding in the back seat of mum & dad's HQ Comm. Games car, year I was born, yadda yadda yadda..

Meant I had to downsize the collection (of rusty cars), so I sold the HQ race car, HJ one tonner, FJ40 Landcruiser & Torana sedan. Felt good to downsize to be honest & in reality when would I ever get around to getting all these cars done??

Here's where it sat for a few months while the shed was being built..

In transit to it's new abode..fun stuff doing this shit by yourself & trying not to hit anything..

Now lets see if I can have a bit more progress with this than vanilla Ice is having with his Sandman  :P  :thebird: (I think I'm winning already cos I posted more than one pic lol)

Good luck,

Are you fixing the hole in the roof?

Thanks Craig. The car came with a roof cut, but I'm not confident to attack that job this time around (I suck at welding) so I'll keep the sunroof for now.

The plan is to eventually restore it back pretty close to original with the vinyl roof which will mean filling it in then.

Here are some pic's of when my mate bought it 10 years go. Drove it only a handful of times then tore it down with his dad. Unfortunately his dad passed away a few years later so it's been sitting around with nothing happening for the last 5-6 years. I'm as keen to get this on the road as much for him so he can take it for a few more drives..

It's so good to have all these older pic's of the car for reference (although the rear louvre may have to go lol)

HQ0003.jpg

He did all the rust work on the car (not that there was much at all) & removed the strip down the sides as the only change from original. The car was apparently spec'd with all the badges, prem boot garnish, boot lid handle from new by the first owner, so I'll keep all these on the car. Get people talking anyway.

A big thanks to my new best mate DJ too. He's gone out of his way to advise me on the process for prepping this car & painting it as well so I'll be applying his guidance & hopefully I won't frOck it up!

Cheers man   :spoton:

Nice old HQ, my parents had a HQ Kingswood wagon in that colour but 202 3spd manual.

Deville badges on the rear pillars, Deluxe badge and HT-HG flags definitely aren't original, these have been added. The side strips were an option like that IIRC, or they may be HJ ones fitted properly (are they smooth or textured?). You'll know by the holes and if they have factory paint inside them if they are done in the body plant or not. The boot garnish may well have been added when the side strips were put on. Not sure about the bonnet spear or the boot lid lift handle. A dealer may have done it all for the purchaser.

Which assembly plant built the car (or is it a CKD car assembled at Trentham?) - you'll know by the ADR plate and chassis number is it is an Aussie assembled car, if it is Trentham it'll have no ADR plate. If it is a Pagewood car the vinyl roof probably isn't original and may have been added when the sunroof was installed - the BODY ID plate may give up if it had a VR or not from the body/assembly plant.

Hit it hard Jase, worst case you will still have a few things to do on it, but whether you get there or not, 10 weeks of hard work is going to get you closer to completion than it is now.

Who knows, you may inspire Gene to put another picture up.

Sweet as.. this is a 202 3spd column change too which will stay as is.

I checked the holes & the ones for the bonnet spear & boot handle had factory paint in them. I'd take a pic but the phone doesn't seem to want to zoom in that close. Will try again later. Couldn't see clearly with the other holes though as the body has been sanded down & there's dust & crap in the holes. The side stripes are smooth, but the holes have all been welded up now so they won't be going back on. Wouldn't be surprised if the dealer added most of these extras for the new owner.

It's all neither here nor there for me to be honest though, & I'm not one to get all worked up if something is not what it should be so any light shed on these things from the likes of yourself is all good & informative mate  :D

Here are some pic's of the tags if you can decipher them for me mate. As you can see there is no passenger side plate..

Will try my best to achieve this timeframe though.. I'm sure I'll get close mate

Trentham assembly. Is there anything under the dymo label?

Only mech options are 202 (L20) and discs (JL2) unless there is more under the dymo.

My guess is the side strips are done in the assembly plant. I think they are the same as HJ.

Cheers mate. checked under the label & nothing else written.

Spent a few hours on Saturday an Sunday cleaning out the car. Happy to report no rust to worry about. Boot looks to have been tidied up in the past. Need to remove the PVC pipe & I'll make up a plate to go over it (used to run on CNG a long time ago)

Mate had already done the work around the windscreen's & with a quick wipe of a rag it came up all shiny..

Small update, but anything is progress..

The car had a few area where surface rust was working it's way under some of the previous primered areas e.g..

20150910_163146.jpg

so spent yesterday sanding them all back & deoxedine them..

20151026_140705.jpg

Next weekend (I hope) to wash all the dust & crap off the car & probably re-deoxidine the sanded areas again, then etch prime & hifill.

Good stuff, are you going to give the first coat of hi fill a block back with dry 180 grit and guide coat to find any lows or highs and then reprime for prep for colour, keep going mate Vanilla Ice will be watching.

Cheers man. Yep that's pretty much it. Might be a few small areas requiring a little filler first but shouldn't be too bad.

Been a lotta years since I tried body prep & never sprayed before so it's all a huge learning curve. Not after a mint job but it'll be something I can say I did myself - for better or worse! haha
