Last night a forum member was asking in the shoutbox about the value of the LJ fuel gauge resistor.

The correct resistor is 1watt 82 ohm and is identified by the following four stripe  colour code.

Grey/red/black/silver or gold. The original resistors have a sliver band but I use the gold band ones as their tolerance is more accurate.

I bought them from Dick Smiths many moons ago when they sold electronic components.

Cheers for your help Dave and Maz. I installed a 5w if that matters, 82ohm resistor, the gauge is working now when the sender is disconnected it reads full but when connected it reads only 1/4 when the float is in the full position, but it is only reading 25 ohm in the full position. I ran a cable from the battery from the negative to eliminate earth faults. But at 25 ohm it still should read at least 3/4 I would of thought. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The 5 watt resistor might be too much.  Jaycar have the correct 1 watt 82 ohm resistor.

Or maybe the gauge needs calibrating after having it apart.

Higher wattage rating shouldn't be an issue. The 5w resistor will have a larger surface area and will therefore dissapate heat better.

Gentle persons
I have just been through this exercise where both my sender unit and gauge were stuffed. My resistor 's solder had broken away from the little wire and the wire had disappeared so when I went to solder the replacement resistor (5 82) there was nothing there and it's worse when you're old and can't see very well.
Anyway I ended up at the repair place and he said 5 w is too much should be 2 w. He is a VDO shop so I guess he knows.
Also for anyone with a broken original sender they can be fixed simply & cheaply. Don't buy a new one surprise surprise they cannot be fixed.
Parts are still available for the original ones and they can be fixed more cheaply than buying a replacement.
And yes you do need to recalibrate the gauge if you mess around with either bit.
Mine now works spot on.

Cheers
Paul

Hi all.

Does anyone know if the standard LC Fuel gauge (6 Cylinder) has the same value resistor as the GTR gauge. Very little information that I can find. I believe this resistor is faulty.

Thanks Dave, So 82 ohm and 1 - 5 Watt should do the trick.

Cheers

Get the 1 watt resistor if you can.

I've always upgrade to a 5 Watt resistor. Cheap insurance in my mind.
