Hey kids,
So I'm after a bit of guidance in regards to an engine build.
I'm looking for 220-250rwkw.
Sticking with a Holden build as car is currently wired and setup for injected 304.
Friend of mine use to have a Vl with a nice little 333 stroker and I really liked it. I realise 333 is not very common or economical which got me thinking.
I really like the idea of smaller capacity higher rpm engines.
Option 1: stock crank linished and balanced.
Stock rods, shot peened, arp rod bolts.
30" over Pistons
Mild cnc job, stainless valves, springs, roller rockers, crane 286 etc etc
Manifold that I can drill out for injection, throttle body on top.
Option 2: normal boring 355 build. Scat scat srp. Roller rockers, crane 286, same intake as above.

Mate that builds our race boat engines will be putting it together for me. Need to allow $1600 ish for assembly/machine work & balancing.
Budget of $5000-$6000.
Honestly don't know which way to go! Help?

If you're gonna stick with less cubes, then the heads will have to be good! All the power is made with the induction system, heads, intake, exhaust and cam, the bottom end is really only there for the ride. Find a GOOD set of heads and the rest should fall into place, don't get caught up on flow figures, its more about quality than quantity, and if it all comes together well, it can quite easily make more HP than the heads flow anyway.

But, more cubes more HP, its easy numbers unless you wanna go custom heads, intake and extractors and a very well thought out combination.

Hate to say it but the 5-6K will have a huge hole in it pretty quick, and personally I'd think EFI was past the limits of the proposed budget, machining holes for injectors is just the start of a very steep hill, fuel rails, regulator, bypass fuel system with EFI pump, mod the tank or pickup for the fuel return, throttle body, custom engine wiring harness, perhaps have the ECU control the ignition as well, new ignition maybe, its a big snowball with countless hours of planning, wiring, fabricating, etc etc etc BUT if you're keen and can do most of it yourself and have half the bits laying about, then get cracking!

A little off the topic,  I notice the Ramsay Inboard logo    & you mention Race Boats.

I think I may have gone to school with your father or an uncle   ( Ian,    if my memory is correct   ( his father is Les ))

Back in the mid 70's      Box Hill Tech..

Hey 57, Yep that would have been my father Mark Ramsay who is Les's son. Both Mark and Les still alive and kicking and still building boats believe it or not. Les is 85 years old!
:)

So in regards to the above topic, I'm putting a deposit on an engine tomorrow.

Plans are to get the guy who does our race engines (Glenn Wells Engines) to go over it and check everything. Set of crane gold roller rockers, set of arp rod bolts. Torque power dual plane manifold, 750cfm quickfuel.
With this plan of attack do we think 220-250rwkw is realistic?

Yes.   is was MARK.   Not Ian,     Ian must have been the guy that always bet the zhit out of me       Where are you now IAN ??

Mark was always talking about stuff with engines ,   ( mostly boats ) ,    that kinda got me interested bikes.   dirt bikes -  then cars  The start of my interest with Toranas,

That engine looks like a good buy -        good luck with your build .
