My original Starter Motor in the S.L R ( 308 red) died many years ago,it only cleared the extractors by a few mm, so a few years ago I bought a "Jaylec Hi Torque Starter" last week it completely stuffed up,the solenoid is cooked and the car has been stuck at my brothers for the last week!.

I bought another Jaylec, because the stock size one has almost no  clearance to extractors, ive tried the VR Commodore type ( Bosch BXH136) and it didn't fit because of the way the Solenoid was orientated, wasn't happy and had a lot of mucking about returning it for a refund at Repco. Anyways we bolt up the  new Jaylec one today and goes WWWEEEEEETTTT!!! everytime we try start it?, the one I had in there prior had no probs at all!??.

So my car is still stuck at my brothers,I can only assume its not meshing with the flexplate for some reason??,yet the old one worked fine, its the exact same starter!??

Hi Scott,

I had similar problems, mine ended up being the battery getting slowly drained, which eventually would be to low to kick starter hard enough to mesh. This would ruin starter motors.Try another battery and see what happens or jumper leads.

worth a go

cheers

Make sure your positive and negative connections are clean, not coroded.
Bad earths can cause voltage drop, leads to all sorts of issues.
Check basics if it is eating batteries, charge rates, current draw with ignition off.

It is reasonably common for aftermarket starter motors to be faulty out of the box. Once you have confirmed it is not the battery I would take it back and try another.

Your best bet is to find a factory starter motor that suits your setup.

See this thread.

Best thing i did was buy one of these, and move it around all the batteries, that don,t always get constant charge from being used.Even my Ducati was having issues, till i bought this charger, starts first go now.

Just disconnecting battery, will not keep it maintained.

I should NEVER have bought another Jaylec,I must have rocks  in my head,we had problems with the very first one I bought years ago ( I had a thread on here),ended up getting another one ,that one worked fine for a few years now this one refuses to mesh with the flexplate. Never again!

Im going to have to take a loss and sell it off on Gumtree and get my original one reco!,I didn't want to go that way cause of the lack of clearance to extractors but im sick of this aftermarket dogshit!, nothing but problems.

We fully charged the battery up and tried it again today.....nothing changed,it just screeches and refuses to mesh with the flexplate,so im not going to waste anymore time on the bastard thing

Could actually be your flex plate.

Grab hold of your fan and give it a slight turn

Then try starting it again.

Need to turn it less than 1/4 turn.

See how you go with that.

I have a standard 308 and aussie 4 speed - and wanted to update the starter (solenoid was not activating all the time)

Tried 3 different starters (diff brands) and none of them would work - not one of them engaged properley. checked them all with a guage and could not see Y they would not work. Ended up just getting the old one reconned. No idea Y some easy things can be so hard.........

I take it you have shimed the starter so it is correctly aligned and therfore meshs with flexplate/flywheel?

shouldn't need shims!!,its listed on the box as part number 70-0114 Starter 12V Suits: Holden V8 253 308, my brother reckons he read a post somewhere saying Jaylec  now make their own Flexplates!, so they must be aware of issues with these damn things...Bastards!

you may need to shim aftermarket starter motors that mount like these do, i know I've had to in the past when fitting them at work.
