So just going over some of the problem areas for rust and this is my plenum, think i need to take plenum cover completely off and fix or just fix from here.

Left pic is after i cleaned it up really quick with a bit of old sandpaper

Middle Pic is untouched

Right pic is phone in the whole aiming to the drivers side area of the plenum

Yeah it's scary to think that no Torana ever made is immune.
You could treat it and wax it etc but if your really keen full access to really get at the rust is the only permanent option.

Mate use KBS three part process. It doesnt appear to have gone right through. As Terry suggested cavity wax afterwards. Should be good for another 20 years.

G'day Dylan,

Looks like yours is in pretty good condition compared to some, but I would say it's lucky you caught it now, if left another five years that could look a whole lot worse!

So are there actually pin holes in that rust or hasn't it eaten through yet?

If no holes you might be able to treat it without having to repair, just get a quality "system" like POR15 that comes in three steps, then pull all the vents and the cowl panel in front of the windscreen and go to town, if you can get some kind of a flexible nozzle spray gun up inside the plenum just treat then coat the entire space till it's running out the drain tubes!

Mine looked like yours before I got the sandpaper and wire wheels onto it and then the

pin holes appeared.

I used KBS , good stuff.

I cut out two sections of the wiper plenum to gain access.

On the valley pieces I cut out(between the wiper pivot mounts) I welded on another edge all the way around

to overlap and i could use screws or rivets to put it back after the KBS.

Dylan

That is a pretty good one, I've seen otherwise just about rust free cars totally shot in that area, especially passenger side. Whatever you do don't try to do it the easy way, do it properly and you'll never have to touch it again. Whether that be using KBS or new steel or something in between, just do it right the first time!

2 access holes for me.

I also removed the dash and got access through the dash face vents

I then went through about 6 small wire brushes taped to various lengths of flat steel to sand it all back to clean metal.

There was surface rust everywhere, but no holes.

3 coates of Killlrust.

This is a good area to practice MIG skills also, as no one will ever see the result.Attached File  IMG_1602_edited.jpg   250.03K   27 downloads

I would just take the top off and attack it that way with Kbs or POR15. I have 2 more projects in about to get into both seem to be ok in the plenum area but I won't risk it only to find water on my carpet later. They will both be coming off and treated with KBS.

Hey terra, have you by chance got any closer pics of where the top section comes off around the a pillar caps? Gotta remove that section off of my car soon and it looks like someone's had a go at it before making it a bit hard to distinguish.
Thanks

Haha yep, it was all bogged up to begin with and I'm definitely starting from a long way back with this car but the price I bought it for was too good to pass up

Alright, so I have marked where i need to cut, is a 1mm grinder wheel too thick of a gap to reapply the same panel ?
Never welded before (but there's a mobile welder right near my house going to get him around)
couldn't cost that much?

Haha, im tempted to just clean out the plenum and just KBS

I've found 1 pin hole near the vent and Back to bare metal under the plenum and nothing,

Also, whats wrong with welding in Brisbane ?

If that's all there is just treat it.

I find it hard to pick the breathable welding fumes from the unbreathable Brisbane smog. lol

Yeah that's it, sorted then! ill just clean out in there and go to town with rust proof :D .

Haha, i'm used to it, in saying that, when i go out more rural areas, it's definitely a lot fresher air.

Are you a member of the QTCC?

If not, might be time to consider it. :)

Nope i'm not (googling what it is now)

Even if i don't plan on racing?

might sound young and naive but what would i gain from being a member?

Being able to go and check out other toranas and such (could help a lot) ?
