All of the above answers are correct.

I hate telling people to re-work shit on their cars (because I HATE being told I need to do it on mine), but yeah that clearance is going to be regrettable.

My thread covers some pretty severe cutting, and I would recommend following suit. Tyres touching the bodywork is just shit.

The other thing that is just shit is Toranas that aren't high, and don't have wheels and tyres that fill the arches with maximised dish. Whether the tyres are fat or not is a different matter, but fitment is really important. It costs nothing other than time to make clearance.

Yeh, video quality doesn't do it justice at all. She's heading home today so I'll put up some photo's that are of a bit better quality. Also, white looks a lot nicer with the blackouts finished  :spoton:

Also...I seem to be missing a door lock mechanism (not sure which side yet) Is anyone able to help me out with a spare?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

I know it's been a while, but as you know things come up. I haven't been able to make as much progress as I would have liked, but this lockdown bizzo is certainly helping me get a few hours in.

Just a quick update of where the build is at  :D

Flare fitment issues...

So my panel beater apparently fit up the flares with the car sitting on the ground and apparently didn't have clearance issues. Ive fit them up today and am not too happy with how they are sitting...I feel like the flare needs to be raised slightly, as the front end is sitting down quite low and is not flush with the sill (is on an angle)

At first I couldn't get the drivers side wheel on at all, as the tyre would foul at the rear. I've had to adjust my trailing arms to try and centre the wheel and have done my best to split the gap, however there is only a few mm on each side and does not seem like enough to allow for movement, speed bumps, drop tank, squat ect.

The passenger's side seems to have enough gap at both the front and rear of the flare. fit is better than the driver's side...

Not too sure where to go from here. Will probably have to get the flares modified and re-shaped...

Unfortunately, yes that would give the best result and give you some breathing room. It seems to be a common thing that they curl inward at the ends giving you more than a half circle, at minimum they require stretching out when installing. I guess its not such a major with 14" wheels and lower profile tyres but no good with anything bigger. The tape and bog over the outside trick seems to work well to hold the shape, just make sure you bolt them to the car to cure once properly glassed up.

(yes the white flares are the wrong ones but you get the idea)

The fix:

DSCN0008.jpg

If the tabs under the front edge are strong you might be able to simply stretch them open a little (probably have to also remove the frontmost lower bolt temporarily to allow enough movement) to get it rolling. You don't really want to have to use your trailing arm adjustment to make the wheels fit long term either, you'll need that for pinion angle and the chances of both sides being identical is slim so might throw it out of square too.

Those flares are likely from about 10th generation moulds.

Have a look at some old photos of race cars and you will see how crap they are.

The bottom of the flare at the front should be horizontal, ie level with the bottom tinwork.

There arch should be fairly close to the edge of the flare at the bottom in terms of profile.

The shell I had was trimmed right to the bottom of the arch of any extra metal, if that makes sense.

Those flares will require lots of work to get them right.

Cheers

Rob
