I have a street regularly driven LC with a worked 202 and 3.55 diff gearing. Currently has a trimatic. Great to drive around town but revs a bit hard at 100km. Considering replacing the transmission. Want to remain automatic. Looking for some info as to what is a good tough transmission that won't compromise bottom end power but will allow better RPM on the highway? Or can the trimatic be modified?

Trimatic will do all you ask, just change the diff centre to 3.08, or get taller tyres. And converter to suit the whole lot.

Agree, any transmission that isn't overdriven in top gear is not going to be an improvement on the Trimatic.

Trimatic was often married up to 2.78:1 with 13" wheels when fitted with 202

Trimatic with 2.78:1 ratio diff was a std combo for 138, 161 and 173 engines also.

Thanks, I knew this, the original question was about a 202 hence my answer

No probs Brian, just mentioned it for anyone that may not be aware the 2.78:1 diff was the std fitment behind the Trimatic.

Gee that's gonna kill your takeoff if you go 2.78 or 3.08.
Maybe some sort of overdrive ala gear vendor or similar might be available. Best of both worlds.

A lot of money to spend to do simply what a taller diff will do! Even dropping back to a 3.36 will drop your revs by over 5%. 3.08 by over 15%.

I think there are kits out there to fit VN-VP V6 4L60 boxes, but again a lot of expense. A 202 LC with 13" rims should be fine with a 3.08:1 rear axle, especially an auto. Get a converter with a bit more stall in it if takeoff is too much of a concern.

Go for the 3:36 as suggested above. Much better all round ratio for around town and on the highway. A T700 will suck too much out of a 202 IMHO.

Hi Dion. To help you out I have a 186s with a Wade 373 grind cam ( HX XU1 cam ). I have a VH Commodore electronic ignition that is set at 16 deg adv. "The cam kicks in at 2800 rpm so that is why I run a dominator 3000 stall. Probably a 2800 stall is ideal but are too expensive.
Off the line no problems. I have a stage 3 yella terra and triple 150CD and bored to a 192. I only had 3 runs at Calder and all were 16.2 flat.
Cheers DazM
