I recently purchased a flat bed car trailer. I am going to convert it to tilt and maybe air bag the thing so I don't need ramps. Has anyone on here done this? Any tips I should look out for? I cant see it being that difficult of a job but you never know.

Wouldn't be much more work to just build a new one from scratch.

Love your work.....I'm currently pondering just this...or ditching it via ebay or gumtree, and getting one of those fancy things that sort of relaxes onto the road.....but have found that one of the main players in that field wont do 2000mm deck width...thus no good for big cars like VE .
Keen to follow this....

The bed is a bit shorter than I wanted but it's 2m wide. Closed in guards too.
It hasn't done much work but like every trailer needs a blast and paint.
Will post a pick when I get it home.
Then after the mods drop it at slaps place cos I ain't got the room lol

Might be simpler to do this Paul:-

I drove my HQ at the time,
onto my Chevy C50 1 metre high ftat-bed truck,
where as this trailer design, you just get out on the steep ramp.

LIMO
built mine this way
still use ramps as need the weight of car loading to tilt
doesn't lift front wheels though

THas how mines setup.
As above still need ramps.
Im thinking about putting some drop down legs at the back, so when it tilts the ramps and deck are more or less level with each other.
At the moment when loading a car the ramps lay flat on the ground as you go up them, then as you drive up the rather steep trailer it stays that way untill your nearly at the front then comes down.
Bit of practice and steady feet and it comes down really gracefully, but would still be better if the ramps didnt lay right down, but the trailer only tilted untill the ramps and deck are inlien with each other.
Cheers.

I used to see a contractor that had a tilting drawbar trailer that had shockers mounted to the front to limit the tilt while
also slowing the fall rate when loading, I recon this setup with maybe the addition of limiting straps would be good for a car trailer.

Thats a much better Idea than what I had planned.
No need to unpin stands, repin them in the downward position, and the added benefit as you say of easing the coming back down.
Thanks man, your a legend.

That is what mine has. The drop down legs hold the ramps across the back as a tailgate, so when you drop the legs the ramps are freed. It isn't a tilt trailer though. I'll put some pictures up.
If you want it to work properly you lead load sharing springs too for a tilt. I looked at a tilt when mine got made but I simply don't see the benefit.

tilt with electric winch is much easier for old bloke loading solo,
I also made fibreglass guards and recessed them sit low and inwards so you can open the doors when the car is loaded
again easier to get in and out of car on trailer

If the 57 won't fit in it then I might just move it on. But I have to get it home first

Hey DJ
I just bought another trailer yesterday that tilts the same as above. Anyway the front has chains on it to limit the tilt when driving on it. Just another option instead of legs at the back or shockies.
I will have a car trailer for sale soon if any one is interested lol. PM me

Don't have any issues with the chains getting jammed under the deck?

Haven't used it yet but it could be a possibility.
