One of my little round plastic wheels on the arm of my hatch window mechanism has been cracked and no longer stays in its track.

What is the best method for replacing them? Anyone ever put anything with a proper bearing on there? From memory they are peened on or rivetted on somehow.

Being a hatch mechanism, I'm not keen to throw the whole mechanism out... they are different to sedan ones I think.

Various roller replacements for shower doors can be found at Bunnings. I used one a few years back to fix the same problem.

Sedan and hatch mechanisms are the same. One of mine is from a sedan front

Well if that is the case (unless anyone has used something with a proper bearing that has improved window operation), I will just use one of my numerous spare sedan mechanisms.

Thanks Grant & Rexy.

For what it's worth put the hatch mech against the sedan one to check in case I am full of shit. I am very confident they are the same though.

I just noticed on EBay there is a site selling them as a rivet set.  Can't download the site but listed under Torana window regulator roller and rivet. Not cheap at $15 each and not exactly sure how you fit them, but there they are. Cheers Ron

Can't help never done it.
I imagine you drill out the old one from the back side, insert the new one and flare it over.
Only a guess though, must be along those lines to some extent

Yeah I think you drill the old one out insert the new one, support the solid end, stick a tapered punch in the side with the blind hole and belt the shit out of it until it peens over.

That is only a guess.

Get the slider type from rares and fit them to all rollers...work much better and wind easier...replaced all mine by drilling out old ones and re riveting the new ones on like you said...better adjustment as well....my windows work better than new...they have much better support than rollers

Glad you found them Heath. I couldn't.  If you decide to use them I will be keen to see how you do it.  Cheers Ron

Yes Heath thats them....they are excellent....my windows wind fantastic....they have a greater surface area in the slide and keep the lifting mechanism square when sliding....as you know a roller only has a small point of contact where as these are slightly spring loaded when installed and have a far greater surface contact area...thus reducing wear.
Just grease them up when installed and youll never have another problem....also ensure they are riveted tight to the lifting arms

Oh also because the plastic slider is mounted to a ball joint they self align unlike a roller which is fixed in one plane these adjust to any angle the slide rail might be installed at ie it allows the glass to freely follow the window channel with next to no load....they are very good

Al, thanks for the suggestion. If they are as you describe, sounds like a great little upgrade. Toranas never had very good window mechanisms!

So how were they riveted back onto the arm? The Rares part has no hole in the end to "stick a tapered punch into & belt the shit out of it till it peens over".
Not sure on the best way to secure them.
Suggestions?

Good question Tony, I will be interested to hear thoughts as I have just bought a set and considering the same thing.  I was thinking either drill a small hole in the middle of the back of the rivet and then punch as suggested or somehow get them pressed/peened in (I am thinking of buying a small press for re-bushing etc.) so thought that might work. Cheers Ron

I thought about drilling also, but I'm thinking that they are a bit longer in the rivet peice than the originals. Not sure. Was going to have a look in the brake pipe flare tool to see if there's a fitting that might get the job done. Not sure

I thought about using my flaring tool but I don't think it would be strong enough. Cheers Ron
