The citric does better getting off old enamel, it is quicker, but flash rust is the problem.

Talk about covid tax. Today I got another bag of citric acid crystal. The price has doubled since last time, apparently due to current freight debacle.

At least molasses is cheap, $35 for 20 litre tub a couple of months ago. It is getting harder to find in quantity and l got mine from a stock and feed store in country Vic. Evidently cows eat it, no rust in a cow's guts.

Cows love it mate. I'm not sure what happens now but in the 70s in Yallourn North while milking they used to have a big block of it to lick. Yummy.

I suppose you could try just let them get slight flash rust then coat with ranex. Will give them a dark iron phosphate coating. I have another set I might try this on.

I've used the Por 15 Cast Iron paint. Looks genuine and has been great for 7 years. One of the best products i've used.

Molasses will eat the aluminium piston in a master cylinder if you dont strip it first.
