Yes And yes depends on how bad the rust is you have to soak the parts longer

Have a molasses dip on the go at the moment .Have a fuel tank that I was going to throw out because it has that much gunk in it .The sender has been in the mix with the tank for just 6 days and it is working very well .Used a 1000 litre Ibc or plastic bulky what ever you want to call it .Cut the frame off at 600 litre mark with grinder .Cut bladder with a hand saw at the same height .Put 40 litres of molasses ($60.00)in it and mixed in 400 litres of water with a big stirer I have made.Sunk the tank in the mix and then put the top part of the bladder I cut off over the bottom part .Nice compact unit and no smell at all  .Surprised at how well it is working .Shall throw up some pics when I can take them .

Have some here I forgot about .That is under a week .Will pull the tank out later this week and water blast it ,put a camera up inside and check it out .Then stick it back in .You can get an idea of how much crud is in the tank from the photos  ,

Bernie, how is tank and sender coming along? Just wondering if concoction is safe for plastics/rubbers ect or do you need to remove from anything you are "molassasing" Cheers and thanks for taking the time to post photos up as always wondered how this method worked.

You can see the high tide mark where l had this partially submerged in a molasses bath.

I wouldn't worry about rubber or plastic although aluminium may get eaten.

Tank is good ,Sender was shagged but I put it in anyway .Washed the tank out a couple of days ago ,put it back in as I think it may have had a bit of air in it still and I put it back in to get the last of it off .Hoping to remove the tank from the mix and will seal it tomorrow with KBS .Had the O ring in the mix and it is still ok .Will pull the sender apart and see what it may have done to the internals .Will start a new post and put it all up so it is out there for others  .

I made up a bath with an IBC similar to Bernie's setup as I had a whole motor to do. It had been left out in the weather for a year and I wanted to see what I could salvage.

Once everything was submerged I picked it up with the forks and put it out of the way under the shearing shed as it was going to be working for five weeks or so. Then I broke my back and it was pretty much forgotten about for 12 months. The end result was total destruction. It looks like the water in the mix evaporated away over the last summer and left a semi dry mud with everything exposed rusted beyond repair.

Obviously, this case is in the extreme, but it would definitely pay to keep an eye on any rust removal projects you have.

Hullo all, from my 40+ years of farming & not in position to use alot of molases, i have witnessed it rust out a couple of 200 litre drums, making quite a mess of the drums. I don’t think I would use it on objects of much value. Jeff

I meant at least it’s not a valuable engine! They are still easy to find. Unlike stuff 20-30 years older.

Hi Jeff, I think anything that removes rust if used for too long it'll destroy the good metal. eg sand paper, sand blasting, rust converters, wire brush etc.

Most rust converters eat away, it's all about timing in my book.

Cheers

Marty

Seen a guy do a shell by setting up a sprinkler system using dripper hose and fittings in his shed. Just keeping it wet for a week. Then roll outside and pressure wash. Cleaned off bad surface rust to clean metal. 10:1 molasses.
