A few days in 10:1 molasses brought these up nice. They mainly just had light surface rust after citric acid soak. Seems a good way to go. Citric acid up to 7 days, then scrub or gerney and put in molasses a few days. It doesn't t seem to suffer from flash rusting.

The citric does better getting off old enamel, it is quicker, but flash rust is the problem.3a82c7d59734481a1b1218e3f2efe67b.jpg

Think I might get them professionally ceramic coated bat. Looks like chrome, cheaper and doesn't go blue.

It wasn't that cheap at $220. What is these days.

Talk about covid tax. Today I got another bag of citric acid crystal. The price has doubled since last time, apparently due to current freight debacle.87a2c54ae2dfe9878c6eeb9cfc96a11c.jpg

At least molasses is cheap, $35 for 20 litre tub a couple of months ago. It is getting harder to find in quantity and l got mine from a stock and feed store in country Vic. Evidently cows eat it, no rust in a cow's guts.

Cows love it mate. I'm not sure what happens now but in the 70s in Yallourn North while milking they used to have a big block of it to lick. Yummy.

Went for the silver partly for the anti-radiant effect bat. They would be able to do a matte cast I'm fairly sure. Clear not really an option I think due to etch prime needed. Waste of effort if not etch primed first I'd say.

By the way Duane the manager said don't soak in molasses or citric next time. Makes the cast a bit porous and hard to paint. Just give to them and they will blast them.

I suppose you could try just let them get slight flash rust then coat with ranex. Will give them a dark iron phosphate coating. I have another set I might try this on.

I've used the Por 15 Cast Iron paint. Looks genuine and has been great for 7 years. One of the best products i've used.

I tried the old molasses trick , it’s been soaking a few months now , my ratio was 5:1 , I pulled this master cylinder off an old HK , I thought it was past saving , but came out a treat , I’ll get it reconditioned for a spare.

Molasses will eat the aluminium piston in a master cylinder if you dont strip it first.
