Just wondering how people have overcome the problem I just discovered when dropping a blue 3.3 commy motor into the old lc. blue sump has dipstick tube welded to passenger side of sump, whereas old red motor style is pushed into block, drivers side. Is it easy to knock welch plug out of blue block and slide red motor dipstick tube in, or do I need to cut and re-weld section from blue sump into red motor sump. Hopefully someone has experienced this hurdle in the past. The easiest solution would be to punch welch plug out, but not sure how simple that is. Thanks in advance - Paul.

Knock out the welsh plug. It takes all of 2 seconds when you already have the sump off, then just use the red dipstick.

Put a self tapping screw into the plug and pull it out with pliers. Can do this from the top with the sump on.

Keep in mind for the majority of the early Commy lifespan they were still making WB commercials, so they needed both dip stick positions and I highly doubut an engine was designated to go to a certain place at a basic machining stage :D

Commodore had the pickup tube in the sump, WB had the pickup tube in the "regular" spot, they were making both models at once for a long time, and it would be very inconvenient to have to cast two seperate blocks or machine the same casting seperately for two different engines, So I can only assume they just cast and machined everything to suit both and in the assembly room where they were assigned engine numbers and the like either put a welch plug in the dipstick tube hole and a commy sump on it, or a dipstick tube in the dipstick tube hole and a WB sump on it.

The WB dipstick is a different design to the red engine and red tube, the stick has a moulded plastic section that locks into the tube, somewhat different from the red that seals over the tube

Commodore sumps have the pan at the front. WB at the rear (like Torana). I'd be checking the length of the dipstick/tube etc.
