Where front disc brake backing plates/ shields excluded on all XU1's?

Yep. No rotor shields on XU1.

The clip on thingys on top of the calipers that stop little pebbles and stuff falling into the pad area. Along with the backing plates they were deleted to maximise the cooling effect of the air dam.
