Hey Guys,Ive been part of this forum now for 6 years and i thought id share a couple of my on going pictures of the car which was meant to be a quick tidy up, sell it and then use the funds to restore my LX hatchback ..Weve all been caught out by this, but also im trying to correct all the things wrong with this car whilst improving it at the same time. Its had a full nut and bolt resto ands its still unlicensed maybe because i love doing every thing twice....Theres a way to go yet so enjoys the show.
This is how the project started...Attached File  2014-03-13 17.31.55.jpg   580.13K   10 downloads

Its currently undergoing a gearbox transplant ,it was a celica 5 speed, buts its going back to a aussie 4 speed for licensing purposes,The work shop that done the inspection stated that an engineer had to sign off on the chassis kit..Beg your pardon I asked..No kits allowed He said..I tried correcting him about the CRS gearbox crossmember. He was adament that the front end was aftermarket, that then started a heated debate,I left saying "i think its time you got out of the game sir" and drove off. More pics to come.

Lets go back a step, i just down loaded a program on how to shrink my pictures. This is the first day i bought it at the guys house, clearly he was over it.$4500 dollars later and it was mine.. Sept 1971 LC Torana Factory fitted 173 aussie 4 spd.It was a mess but all the hard parts were there.Only got to hear it running,Had a nicely worked 186 which hemoraged oil on start up.Seriously like it had no rear main.Couldnt drive it,the 5 speed had no tailshaft.Ok no worries got it on the car trailer and got it home.Attached File  01112012114-1-1280x960.jpg   227.67K   7 downloads

Once home, I got a punch list together,Of what needed doing, of what I could get a way with to clean it up for sale,I decide to start the clean up process on the body,a couple of rust bubbles were bothering me.Well that soon blew out.The nose cone was rotten, mainly bog and fibreglass,Its was just quicker to replace it than try to repair it.I cut off the old nosecone, tack the new one into postion got my gaps right.Repair came out well.Attached File  20140818_142927-800x480.jpeg   88.55K   6 downloadsAttached File  DSCN2917-800x600.JPG   87K   4 downloadsAttached File  DSCN2919-800x600.JPG   83.44K   4 downloads

Just finished surgery, Thank god my wisdom teeth are out,im in a world of pain. So I set about making a template that I could fill the hole with,so using the passenger side for measurements I formed a rough shape.I then transferred that shape onto a solid bit of pine which I could use as a buck to mould the panel around.Once happy with the basic shape, thru repeat fitting and a profile guage I started to shape the wood to get the correct clearences needed for the door, when its fully opened.Attached File  20150723_151028-600x1067.jpg   119.4K   5 downloadsAttached File  20150726_164348-600x1067.jpg   121.62K   3 downloadsAttached File  20150802_095425-600x1067.jpg   112.91K   3 downloadsAttached File  20150727_100550-800x450.jpg   90.98K   3 downloads

I set about shaping the the steel around the buck i made,I was happy with profile now, just need to fine tune the steel around it.Once happy with the basic shape I could start welding it. The tramedo has worn off,I can think again now, I trial fitted the support on and off the car numerous times also fitting the door at the same time, so I knew I had the right opening clearence. After some hammer and dolly work, I used some metal filled bog to smooth out some mild ripples and used some zinc primer then painted kill rust on the back side.Once I was happy with the fit up, It was the welded into postion.I then sprayed a coat of etch, followed by some high fill primer.Attached File  20150804_112735-600x1067.jpg   133.52K   4 downloadsAttached File  20150804_123425-600x1067.jpg   119.35K   3 downloadsAttached File  20150912_151958-768x1024.jpg   128.91K   3 downloads

I was fortunate that the car doesnt have much rust as someone has replace both lower rear quaters, not to my standard, but it means, its not totaly bogged up.I found some more rust hiding under the passenger side scuff panel.Thought i'd repair that while i was in the welding mood..Any way I cut out the the crap, formed acouple of sections. Then I fit and weled it, till I got a nice bare metal finish.Attached File  20150813_123342-768x1024.jpg   250.89K   6 downloadsAttached File  20150813_124258-768x1024.jpg   239.63K   4 downloadsAttached File  20150820_093235-768x1024.jpg   143.77K   3 downloadsAttached File  20150820_094547-768x1024.jpg   151.71K   4 downloadsAttached File  20150914_134116-1024x768.jpg   128.09K   3 downloads

I have a heap of engine and gearbox combos laying around,I needed to buy some thing holden, this time something six cyl powered.I narrowed the choices to EH HR or LC as I knew they would sell well.Cash for my LX hatch right. The 186 in the LC just would not stop bleeding oil.Idle it for 5mins,guaranteed to leak a 100mls of oil onto the ground.Sounded nice but rooted. So I removed the motor and decided to paint the engine bay. After a light sand and some prep work, another job down.Nothing worse than trying to sell an old car with a dirty engine bay.Attached File  Studio_20160705_162203-1024x518.jpg   123.92K   3 downloads

Don't think so.

Mine went over with Aussie 4 speed, originally Opel.

Difference may be that they may notice the extra gear on the 5 speed, and also the LC did come with an Aussie 4 speed so they didn't expect an Opel when they picked on mine?

Hey guys, when I tried to get the LC licensed ,the gentleman stated,I could only use what gearboxs were fitted during the LC production run without engineering input..He also stated all Vss paperwork had to be filled and submitted to transport for the 5spd.The killer was the chassis kit statement he submitted to transport which it doesnt have. This involves,Engineering input, speed test, weighbridge document, swerve test and god know why a exhaust sound test ?,He really stuffed me over.Simple solution was to put the aussie 4 back in it and take it to another inspector.
