Who restored you head and tail light surrounds Kev

Looking at the photos I think you and I have an idea who did them Gene and it wasn't me. I recognise the background from his eBay photos.

Hi Gary,

I'll take photos on the weekend of the top of the radiator support panel compared to the original one, the Rare's one is not finished as well. It would need a fair bit of work to make it look like the genuine Holden item.

Those are the same rad support panels that Oldskool and Muscle Car Parts  and everybody else are selling. There is only one manufacturer and I'm pretty sure it isn't Rare Spares.

Hi Dave,

I think you're right about the radiator support panel, it didn't come in a Rare Spares box even though I bought it from them.

I only needed the bottom half so I wasn't too fussed.

 

Gene a guy on the Torana forum calls himself Macdou restored the headlight and tail light surrounds, yes he's in Queensland.

 

Gary the parts car has been a blessing, even for things like working out which holes shouldn't be in the engine bay. It's also supplied a good fuel tank, seat mounting captive nuts, the battery tray and panel underneath. It was a real rust bucket, now mostly been stripped and parts sold. Anyone need a hacked out front section with rails and inner skirts, or a roof? I'm in North West Vic

Hi Kev, looking at the parts car, what's the rear floor pan like in it for rust mate ? Pity it's so rusty, but then i suppose you don't mind cutting them up when they are ! Rares needs to sell the 6 cylinder battery tray as well, they all seem to rust, see it's provided a heater box, grille & bonnet hinges too. If the bonnet is okay, i think you should keep that as well mate. Gary.

Oh yeah + the door strikers handles, locks, keys ect, someone might like the dash crash pad to use a exchange 1 to, + you have all the original screws, seat bolts ect, very handy car Kev Gary.

Yes the car has been very useful, mostly gone now. I bought it from a wreckers in Geelong after buying the AM radio and speaker on eBay.

They'd already sold the dashpad, sunvisors and glovebox lid, bought the whole car minus these items for $1000.

Had only 21,000 miles showing on the speedo, I pulled the head off the 202 to check it and it had the original head gasket and standard bore Holden pistons, I reckon it might have only gone around the clock once.

The rust was shocking, worst I've ever seen in a Torrie it was such a shame would have been a great car to do up as it was a nearly untouched original.

Kev, just wondering what the clamps are for and how they work when you were welding rear parcel shelf infills? thanks paul. Also where in vic are you?

Hi Dave your spot on, Sep 73 Adelaide built car.

 

Paul the clamps are to hold the metal at the correct gap (1mm) for welding, and also to keep the metal at then same height.

I picked up 8 on ebay, they've been very useful. i'm located around the Gisborne area, are you interested in the rails or roof?

kev thanks for that, that makes sense, not after any parts at this stage, I might need a rear seat panel at some stage if the one I am repairing doesn't work out. (The panel between boot/rear seat) rares don't make a reco one as they don't usually rust out. I'm in eastern suburbs of melb, so its just handy to know where other forum members are so we can help each other out if needed. Cheers paul, and keep up the good work, your doing a great job.

Yes, it had the original JL 202, I sold it to my brother for a Oct 73 GTR with no tags he was going to rebuild.

He ended up abandoning the project and the car and engine are now up in Queensland somewhere.

Engine was listed on the VIN disk as belonging to this car, hopefully some checks are made by a prospective buyer before a "matching numbers" GTR is sold off at a later date.

Thanks Kev. Being a factory 202 car she should also have the 13 x 5.5 rims. Does it have the second spare wheel bracket in the boot?

 

It's a bummer when a few smallish jobs turn into major repairs but it'll be worth all the effort at the end of the day.

Hi Dave,

It came with 4.5 " rims on the front, and a set of non Torana 13" rims on the back, the wrecker had already sold the original rims off the car. Her's a picture of inside the boot, it has the 4.5" rim brackets.

And yes, one step at a time it's getting there

I had a good look under the GTR at the rear suspension arms, all the bushes are original Holden and very tired.

So out came the whole rear suspension, looks like it might be the original housing by the date and the part number.

The diff centre is a 3.08 single spinner, does anyone know if the date of 4th Oct 73 is about right for a 7th Dec 73 built car?

Here's the rear suspension arms, pre and post sandblasting. Once they're all blasted, new bushes will go in, wire brush and paint the diff. I'm also toying with having the diff centre rebuilt once it's out, won't hurt (except the wallet!) to have new bearings and a pinion seal

The date on the diff housing sounds about right for your build date.

Thanks James, any idea on the diff centre casting date? I'm hoping it's the original diff for the car

The diff housing is dated 21 November 73 and the banjo is dated 4 October 73 so all looks good.
