Hi Marty,

Thanks for the feedback, I'm still not exactly sure that I've got all the right parts so I'm not going to put up a post saying this is the way to put your shifter and linkages back together on an LJ if I've gotten it wrong!

I'm 99% the shifter rods were black though, the ones off my GTR still had some of the black on them and I've seen some concourse restored ones in black so I had mine black zinc plated.

Cheers Kev

Time to get the GTR back on it's wheels, so I'm fitting new wheel bearings and seals to the rear axles. First I ground down the retaining collar a fair bit, one good hit with a cold chisel and the collar was off. Then I used the cold chisel to progressively tap the bearing down the shaft to remove it. A quick clean up with the sandblaster, and a coat of epoxy paint

Axle housing and control arms have been sandblasted and epoxy painted, diff centre rebuilt and ready to fit. Axles went in nicely, had all the bolts zinc plated.

New rubber bushes of course. Shocks are new Monroe Wylie gas, repainted in a mid green colour hopefully somewhere near the original colour.

It's back on it's wheels! first time in 15 months. My mate George has painted the dash, and also the bottom of the sills while it was still upside down on the rotisserie. He reckons it will be too hard to get good coverage underneath with the car on its wheels.

Hi Kev, brilliant work there, looks fantastic.
You should of made a seperate thread titled 'M20 and shifter rebuild' or something, then people searching can find it.  Excellent work with the photos and descriptions.
I did my selector rods in zinc which I thought was correct. Not sure though.

It's been a while since I've posted, lots of little bits and pieces on the go.

I've finished the engine and gearbox, trailered it down to my mates place and fitted it on to the front crossmember.

I'm waiting on some new flywheel bolts, then I'll bolt up the flywheel, clutch and gearbox. The plan is to leave the whole lot on a trolley and drop the car on the crossmember using the hoist

Finished the rear suspension and brakes as well. All new brake linings, brake drums, wheel cylinders, handbrake cables. Everything else painted and plated.

Also had the steel 5.5" rims hydroblasted and painted in low gloss GMH Black 40, then the correct silver paint and finally the original hubcaps and wheel nuts that have been rechromed fitted. My original wheel trims are pretty dinged up so I chased up probably one of the last sets of Rare Spares wheel trims available.

It's weird that Rare's aren't bring in any more Monaro or Torana wheel trims, you'd think they would still be able to sell plenty of them

The cut out in the chrome dress rims for the valve normally needs to be made a bit bigger. It looks like it's pushing on the valve.

Your wheels look good, keep up the good work, but for a LJ GTR wheel the centre should be black to the outside edge of the wheel nuts to be correct.

Thanks for the tip on where the black paint ends, I thought the black in the centre was covered by the centre cap.
I’ll fix that shortly. And yes you’re right about the Rare Spares wheel trim getting dangerously close to the valve stem, I’ve done some re profiling of the cutout to get some clearance. I notice the original wheel trim has a chamfer around the wheel trim cutout
Cheers Kev

It's all looking fantastic Kev. This will be one of the best GTR's around I recon.

And then finally the engine is going back into the engine bay. Much easier using the hoist to do this, carefully lowering the car on to the front end while keeping everything aligned. Then bolt the front end and gearbox crossmember up.

Yeah i wondered about that there is no spacer. I've only got the S model and thought that it might be an GTR/XU1 thing to not have a spacer.

regards

I think that at some point in the production timeline the cross member was changed and that not spacers are required on the later cars.

Hi guys,
The way I understand it that for 73 production to pass the crash protection ADR’s a different, wider cross member with large washers and no spacers was used. Here’s a thread with more info

Hi Kev, yes that's the wrong cross member.  It needs to be the wider version and no spacers.

I presume yours is a late 73 or 74 build with the breather going to the air cleaner?

Marty
