Just wondering what after market A\C units people recommend? Looking to install one on an EK ute (red 186 motor).

What units are good or bad?

What sort of price will I be looking at to get someone to install?

Any good A\C installers on the Gold Coast that people can recommend?

Cheers

Sam

Thanks mate. Will take a look at the Vintage Air kits and see if I can find any installers on the Gold Coast.

Thanks mate. If I end up doing it myself there will be questions for sure!!

Out of interest what sort of price are you charging for a complete supply and install?

No worries.

Each install cost will be different depending on what the owner wants with regard to vents/location of vents/originality/subtlety/routing of lines/performance/bling etc.

Approx 2k in parts and 1.5k in labour will be in the ballpark for an install the one I did on my car.

Be worth every cent in our climate, I'm surprised at the number of classics that don't. How the hell can you drive it in summer !

Exactly. FrOck I never had a car with decent air cond until about the year 2000. Old man still drives with the window down, he's never used air cond ever :)

Thanks guys. I might be a sook but the windows down option doesn't cut it for my daily diver during summer anymore.

I will keep doing the ring around the Gold Coast and Brisbane to see if anyone can install before I try to do it myself.

So they work well do they? How would you compare them to the A/C on a reasonably late model Commo or Foulcan?

They work great.
Using the variable rate LS compressor they have very little drag on the motor when running (zero drag when off) and perform superbly.
With the modifications I made to the venting and ducting I'd argue they perform as well as a late model car.

Hey Darren,

What modifications did you make to the venting and ducting?

Did you make any modifications to the Vintage Air unit? I have one sitting in the boot I hope to have time to fit one day.

Also did you make your own hoses or get Pirtek or Enzed or similar to do it?

Cheers, Tom

I am not familiar with the variable rate LS compressor.

Shit. Somehow I missed this! Sorry.

I blocked off the 3 fresh air ducts that enter the cabin from the plenum.
No mods to the vintage air unit.
Made the hoses and lines inhouse.

Variable rate compressors have a control valve to alter the pump pressure as needed for maximum efficiency.

AFAIK, all VT-VZ V6 & V8 use Delphi V5 & V7 compressors.

Hi guys. I dropped into Australian Auto Air in Mornington today with a view to getting an estimate to getting A/C installed. I have an LX with a stick 308. The heater works but I'm thinking of getting new heating at the same time. They gave me an estimate of $4.5K which astounded me. I was thinking around the $3-$3.5k mark. Can anyone recommend a company anywhere in Melbourne?
