Thanks for the appreciation of my air box guys.

When I originally started designing the air box my design criteria included,

.it must still be able to fit ram tubes inside the box

.I need to get quality air filtration with multiple filter type options.

.potential to be ducted to cold air if desired

.must be easily removed and serviceable

.has to be able to allow for the heater hoses still to be used, I could have run them underneath but I wanted to be able to see them for visual and physical inspection of wear or potential failure. You may notice that the hoses sit nicely with the top of the box, this was no coincidence.

.have potential to be plumbed into the PCV engine breather, this should be fairly easy to set up and help reduce any oil leaks.

.lightweight

.have a plenum as large as possible.

.it must look like it belongs there and potentially look like an OEM part. I considered trying to match the original finish of the heater box. The fibreglasser says that he can also make these out of carbon fibre. This one pictured is a heat and fuel resistant resin.

It's still early days but I think I can tick off most if not all those criteria.

Here's a few photos of my triple dcoe air box all painted up and also connected to my catch can (which is a "42 Draft Designs, stealth catch can). Now that it's connected to the catch can /PCV system I no longer have any oil blowing out of the oil cap and onto the rocker cover and hopefully it should reduce any oil leaks.

I've painted it in black polyurethane which is fuel resistant just incase I pull out any jets etc that then drip fuel onto the air box. It was meant to be satin black but turned out a touch glossier than expected.

Can any of you guys who are running webers please give me a measurement from the inner guard to the lip of the ram tubes on barrels 5 and 6 plus from the firewall, I'm curious if we can fit this with other manifold types. If we can make it fit I'd be interested in getting some expressions of interest on these and I can then pursue making more for those who are interested.

Obviously it's much easier for me to supply one without drilling the backing plate.

Top job James

Thanks Gene.

So can anyone with a redline or other manifold fitted give me a measurement on the clearance between the ram tube lip and inner guard on the rear carb?

Thanks James

Thanks,
If you can also measure from the top of the chassis rail to the centre line of the barrels on the rear carb, just as an extra cross reference.

From what I've been told so far the redline manifold sits around 15mm higher than my Seton manifolds which would be quite beneficial.

Quality is poor but here's my airbox mated to 48dco/sp webers.. still needs more development but is the max capacity i could squeezed in

It's good to see someone else having a go at this too. Keep up the good work.

Have you got ram tubes still attached and any filtration? Are you going to duct it to cold air intake? What materials have you used?

Cheers James

I actually put this on the back burner some time ago.. yes the standard ram tubes were still in place, bit tight but it worked.

Initially we built firstly because filters were gonna cost small fortune. This had ak&n pod on the front.

Was sheet ally which we bent up on a cheap hare and forbes panbrake ($300ish). Outer face is fully removable by means of Allen head bolts into nutserts. I used some rubber as seal from Clarke rubber.

its great to see some innovative airbox designs and that someone else is mad enough to make one up. i saw one on a group NC Charger at the Noose hill climb, I should have snapped a pic. this brute of a Charger makes just over 400 HP.

Making one to fit in a charger has got to be a lot easier than ours due to having more room to work with.

I'm surprised that none of the Su carb guys are tackling this that I've seen. Once again they'd have more room to play with than us and could possibly use an off the shelf item from BOI PERFORMANCE or EFI HARDWARE.

We are thinking about it :D

Chargers don't necessarily have more room, they have a strut tower in the way.

I took a pic of this one in an nc pacer (I think) a couple of years ago. The lid simply bolts on to the backing & a massive duct coming from the front.

It looks like it's possibly one of the air boxes from BOI PERFORMANCE.

I designed mine so that it points directly to the space between the headlight and radiator to possibly get air from ducting through there like in the picture above but I can't bring myself to put such a big hole in my radiator support panel at this stage.

I did this years ago. Twin ports with long tubes back to twin GRA throttle bodies. Filters in front of the rad support. Cold air with a ram effect from the air well behind the grill. Worked pretty well.
