Hi guy's, I'm just Wondering about the difference between a std bosch lj torana alternator & the bosch xu1 alternator, apart from the pulley. Is the part number only on the sticker ? If someone has some photos of things i should look at date marks ect. What would be the best parts to use in it, fag or Timken bearings ect. Would be nice to see an exploded view, if possible, it's to suit a 9/72 brisbane xu1. Are they still 35 amp alternators ? Gary.

Gary

Looking at the LJ Parts Catalogue, it appears that the Bosch alternators for that period are the same on the 6 cylinders. 35 amp 13.5 volts. The "Generator Assembly" has a different part number to the others, but that would be because it includes the larger pulley. The only additional individual components mentioned specifically for the XU-1 are the pulley, 2 braces (instead of 1), and a bolt with extra length to accommodate the extra length.

Cheers

Assume they'd be similar except maybe detail changes that xu1 had.

Jump up to 55 amp if you as they all bolt up the same

The part number for the "Generator Assembly (Bosch) XU-1 eng.) is 2820452. That is largely irrelevant, because the part number would only appear on the spare part packaging.

I can only assume that the original would have had the zinc plated fan and black pulley.

Hi Tony

The casing changed with the LJ - no longer had the black plastic grill thing on the back

9 120 060 679 is the correct one. Mine has the same number but ends with 677. I was on it when I got it and it works fine.

Cheers

From my memories from back in the day there were 2 different alternators fitted to Holdens.

One was Bosch the other was Lucas.

Without the knowledge of the rivet counters back then, I could find no reason for which was fitted to what.

But working at a mates Service Station from the mid 70s I changed many of them.

Always used Lucas Exchange alternators.

Was a big thing when the ones with the inbuilt regulator came on the market.

Also rebuilt a few myself.

Be very careful removing the bearings especially the rear one.

You dont want to move the slip rings at all.

If you do you will more than likely break the wiring to the rings and render the unit useless.

Check the diodes.

Best to remove one leg of the diode from the circuit before testing.

Should be 9 of them to test.

1 faulty one will cause dramas.

What alternator should be on a 11/1972 build XU1. When did they go from external to internal regulators on the LJ.

Brisbane Bosch?? ....  Melbourne Lucas?? I only ask because it seems most L34s had the Lucas. Do you know if yours is original Arrimar?
