Hi guys,

I was driving along at night and the instruments went out, when I pulled over I noticed the interior light would not come on and the brake lights where out also. Where should I start to look for the electrical problem? The instruments fuse looks ok (I'll get a new one just to be sure).

Thanks!

When you say "the instruments went out" do you mean the gauges stopped working or their illumination went off?

Just the illumination went off

Those 3 things work directly off the battery. Maybe a plug came off the back of the fuse panel?

I've had that happen, was a dirty fuse contact in the fuse block, old age caused most if it methinks. Mines LX Feb78, I imagine it has the same electrical layout.

The Instrument cluster and stop/tail are on two different circuts.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The enlarged electrical diagram is awesome.. I'll start by looking behind the fuse panel to see if any plug has fallen out and look over the the related fuses to see if just a bad contact with the fuse.

Use a test light on the fuses if you can.
Sometimes they look ok but fall apart in the end caps.

Common these days will be the contact areas of the plugs and fuses.

An old ink eraser will clean up the fuse contacts pretty well as well as the spade terminal sections.

Make sure the female parts of the electrical connectors are making good contact as well.

Sometimes a small screwdriver in the plastic section will bend the females enough to make contact properly.

If that all fails check all the earth points

It turned out to be a dodgy fuse contact (I opted to just replace the fuse, and things work nicely) -- thanks for everyone's help, much appreciated! :)

LX wiring diagram shows the same as LH. Inst panel lamps are on a 3 amp fuse, Stop & Tail lights are on a 15 amp fuse.

It was 1988 ... so the memory might be foggy

But I was driving home from sky show and people were abusing me cause my brake lights weren't working in heavy traffic

I also recall no dash lights

Honestly can't remember if the interior light was working or not

Ok, I get it now.

Power feed goes via the stop tail fuse to the light switch which when the light switch is in the PARK or ON position sends power to the inst lights via the inst light fuse.

If the stop tail fuse fails there will be no power to the inst panel fuse.

The Instrument cluster and stop/tail are on two different circuts.

Actually the second fuse is supplied power from the first fuse.

The fuse marked 'STOP, TAIL, DOME, HORN' supplies power to the light switch & the green wire from the light switch (which is powered up when lights are ON) supplies the smaller 'INST LTS' fuse via the rheostat. So if the tail lights lose power (because of a blown fuse or faulty connection) so do the instrument illumination lights.
