On the new 21 circuit loom i have bought i cannot be certain of which new lead goes to which original position on the ignition switch.

I am doing an LS3 conversion so there are certain things i do not need.

But it is as follows

New Loom

Pink = Ign switch coil

Red= Ign switch power

Black = Ign switch power

Purple= Ign switch start

Brown = Ign switch ign

Original pins off ignition switch

Green= Water temp switch on engine

Purple= Solenoid starter motor

Red= Light switch

Yellow = Ignition Coil

Pink= Ignition coil and fuse panel

Brown= FUse panel then heater switch

So basically out of the "New Loom" wires, which ones go to the pins on the ignition switch?

I have a bit of an idea (eg new Red ignition switch power goes to old Purple solenoid starter motor)

But i need someone who knows this stuff inside out to let me know.

Just a reminder this is for an LS3 conversion into an LX.

Thanks in advance.

Orange= Ign switch accessories

Did the new wiring loom come with a schematic that you can post up?

Without a diagram we'd only be guessing, but if I was to guess I'd say:

red and black may be full time power and ground respectively

pink and brown may need power when the key is in the IGN and START positions

and purple may be powered only while the key is in the START position

But again, that's pure guesswork unless you have a wiring diagram? Some of those may need to run through relays too?

Sorry i have no idea why the orange wire explanation ended up at the end of the post

But orange = Ign switch accessories is on the new loom.

Unfortunately no schematic wiring diagram with the new loom which i also found a little strange.

I have the wiring diagram for the original LH torana from here.

Maybe i need to search for a wiring schematic for the new 21 circuit loom.

Do you have any instructions at all?

I'd be asking your supplier for a wiring diagram, for my money I would've made sure it came with one, otherwise you could spend hours tracing wires back with a multimeter!

It'd also be handy in the future if you (or an auto-elec) ever need to track down some problem.

Thanks Brad, we've got the Torana diagrams, we need to schematics for the LS3 wiring loom.

Adrian, is "21 circuit" the brand name or just however many circuits it has?

It is the EZ wiring 21 circuit loom.

I have the torana diagram and i can fairly easily work out where each wire goes within the new loom (eg to the fuse panel etc) but i just cant seem to have a clear picture in my mind of which pin on the ignition switch is for example the accessories pin, or the individual wire that goes to each pin on the ignitiion switch from the new loom.

I have worked out where the two looms need to join together and have done that. It is more a case of in the new loom which wires go to each pin on the ingition switch.

Here is the instructions that came with the new loom. A little basic and kind of outdated looking.

I think i more need a break down of what each pin on the torana ignition switch is generically for.

Do you own a multimeter and know how to use the ohms function? If not, you need to A: get a DMM. B: learn how to use the ohms range.

This will rule out any guess work.

Good point mate. I do know how to use a multimeter to identify wires from points of origin etc and thats a good way to eliminate guessing.

The looms themselves are very well marked and it is all fairly straightforward.

I just need some help in identifying what wires off the new loom go to each pin on the ignition module.

As per my original post they are all labelled generically with ign power, start, coil etc but this does not line up with the original job that each pin does in the torana wiring diagram.

As an example, the coil does, but i wont need to run that as the computer will take care of that for the LS3.

I more need to know which pin on the ignition switch is for accessories, which one is for starting the engine (i assume this is the lead that goes to the starter which is the purple wire in the torana diagram)  which pin is for the ign/ign wire etc.

Possibly someone who has done this conversion (or an LS1) and did the wiring themselves or with someone else would know and be able to help me out.

Yep thanks again mate.

One of the issues is this new loom has all the ignition wires in two separate connectors, 4 wires in one and 2 in the other (one wire in each is power as it is split and goes one into each connector) but the connectors are wrong and will not fit into the ignition switch on the column. If it plugged straight in i would be much happier! It is however supposed to be made up to suit the LX torana, but alas it is not right.

Okay I see what you're saying now...

If you look at the switch diagram in the Torana manual, you can see the terminals are the checkered pieces and the horizontal bars are what connects them as the switch moves in the direction of the arrow:

IGN_Switch.jpg

So, you need to supply battery voltage to the RED wire (terminal "B1"), this powers everything that runs off the switch. I assume this is the RED wire from your loom?

The PURPLE wire from the switch (terminal "S") would connect to the PURPLE wire on your loom to activate the starter motor.

I would tie the YELLOW (terminal "12") and the PINK (terminal "11") together and connect them both to the PINK and BROWN wires from your loom (this is necessary because you need to supply power to the coils both while cranking and when in the "IGN" position).

The BROWN wire from the switch (terminal "A") would then go to the ORANGE wire from your loom to supply the accessories.

The last wire from the switch, the GREEN wire (terminal "G1") looks like it can be left disconnected, I'm guessing it's original purpose was to illuminate the telltale on the dash while cranking, likely just to test the bulb?

The BLACK wire from your loom I assume is just an earth and can also be left disconnected?

EDIT: Actually, those two terminals might be "I1" & "I2" which would make more sense.

The Red wire shown above comes from the fusible link/B+ terminal on the starter post.

Brilliant guys thanks for the help. It is along the lines of what i was thinking. Just went hoe and took photos of all the connections and the looms etc so i can draw a little schematic and work it all out. But what you are saying i think is pretty close. Based on what you say and a little homework i will let you know what i end up with. I just have to work out what the computer does (eg powering the coils) that doesn't need the original wire to be run.
