After being stranded with a clutch pedal going to the floor and staying there, I found an unlikely culprit. I couldn't believe it was my pedal that failed. Has anyone ever had this happen to them, or know of it? I was stunned.

Now I have to either find another pedal, or go cable.......

Cheers,

Chuck

Never seen that happen to a Torana clutch pedal before, although I'm sure way way back in 1972 the 35XW7 project engineers saw that happen to a shitload of clutch pedals due to extra heavy heavy duty V8 clutch plates lol-049.gif

Seriously though that should be repairable and possibly be plated to beef it up a bit.

Mine wasn't that bad,my hardened pins, were removed and new ones pressed in,clevis clip goes onto,it doubled on the metal bracket of what holds the metal clutch rod.then had rebuild the whole rat trap metal linkages, and engineering friend of mine did it,I gave him another rat trap to do as a spare one for me if I ever need it,he remade to factory spec's and much stronger.I put on a couple oil drops on the linkages, before I take it on the road, rebuilt in 2006,and never had a problem ever since.

Regards John.

'll give it to a mate of mine to see if we can repair it. f not, Gene, I may need to PM you about that spare clutch.

Funny thing is, there are no signs of the onset of fatigue, it appears to just have let go in one hit. I'd like to keep the rat trap for authenticity, however, you don't look too authentic broken down on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. Maybe cable is the way to go?

Cheers, Chuck

How'd it go Chuck, fixed yet?

On another note what's the story with the green pedal bearings?

Hi Guys,

Had it welded up. Hopefully she lasts.

The green bushes were some bushes I had an engineer have a go at making for me. I gave him one of my original bushes to go off. Seeing as you can't buy these clutch bushes anywhere, I asked him to have a go at making a few for me.

They work pretty well - so far.

Don't want to get into a flame war but, WTF are you on about??? Maybe you should think more about what you're typing......

Were you on the pi$$ when you wrote this rant?

If I decide to buy another clutch pedal, or heaven forbid go to a cable system, then good luck to me. There's me thinking about it and finding a solution I'm happy with. I actually remember that in the good ol' days as you put them, most people went to Repco or the manufacturers and replaced broken bits & pieces because replacement parts were readily available. I also remember some people 'upgraded' to parts they thought were better. It was a huge market - Yella Terra for example. I think I'll continue fixing my cars the way I have done for over 30yrs, even if that means changing or replacing old fatigued parts as a better solution. I find the increased reliability and better driving experience reassuring. The cars get driven pretty hard so I need this assurance. Each to their own I always say.

Oh well, thanks for the demeaning advice 'DAD', but I'll continue driving my little Toranas, if it's all the same to you.

PS: If you read a few posts above your little piece of wisdom, you would have noted that the pedal had in fact been welded.  :D

chuck

son

or for all i know grandson

first time in all my time on this forum that anyone has really had a go at me so personally

you have my respect

chuck i apologise for any possible disrespect that you believe i inferred on you

i admit i could have worded my post better

BUT

i am correct in stating that we live in a world of replacement part not repair or engineer the problem to a solution

what makes you think that a second hand or n.o.s pedal would be any better than what you had

maybe you have a really big left foot

i don,t know

all i was stating is people these days don,t know how to overcome problems when they are confronted with them

you may just be the exception

many apologies to you sir

not son or grandson

p.s cable clutch as in a9x torana not that great either

they break!

many apologies if i have offended you in any way

was not my intention

cheers

davemc

Dave,

Accepted and forgotten about. Thanks - All good.

Unfortunately I do have a big left foot (size 13) which may not have helped the cause, who knows. Probably more to do with the HD clutch that's in it.

It's welded now, so will see how she goes when I get her back in later today. I think it should be good for a few more years.

Good to hear it's welded and driving again Chuck,
I had this happen to me in a 72 LJ, 1st I thought it was the clutch rod when the pedal would not return, as I was pulling up to the traffic lights ,
Depressing the Pedal down as I came to a stop , then I felt no resistance , so knocked her in to neutral as quick as I could,
Worse thing was we were in the middle of a club run ha ha.
And yes the pedal had failed just like in your photo, this was about 3 years ago, as I had a spare in the shed it was just a case of R&R, after driving her home in 3 rd gear. With no working clutch pedal.
Metal fatigue can and does happen , but our mighty little toran as keep going

Hi Warren,

I'm actually glad to hear that it's happened to someone else as I can stop looking further as to why it sheared like that.

I took it for a spin today in traffic and it went okay. Time will tell.

Have a good weekend guys.
