Dylan,
Each to their own and depends on whether or not you want originality however I have ground mine off for 2 reasons.
1. I am lead to believe it is difficult to maintain good chrome trims and difficult to attach without hassles (for me being a novice at least) and if you happen to bend/dent one not cheap to replace
2. I am going with a light coloured paint and personally I don't think you will notice them. Different on a dark coloured car IMO.
Cheers Ron

As above, its up to you.
Its not hard to maintain, its stainless steel.
Its also fairly easy to fit, IMO atleast.
That said, if you dislike the look of the trim, then feel free to delete it.
If you think the trim will suit the paint scheme you are planning, then by all means keep it.
Cheers.

Do I need the chrome trim on doors? Is it dependant on what colour I choose?
If I don't do I just cut these off?
It's not dependent on colour but what look you are after.
If it's LX, the SL/R 5000's didn't have the trim around the windows but the SL/R's and SL's did.

Rare spares do a screw fitted clip nowadays. Lot easier to instal. Just in case you grind em off and change your mind later.

They look better with black around the window frames
The SL/R's had black around the window frames and the stainless trim.

I could be wrong but I don't think they are stainless (way too soft) I am thinking silver anodise alloy.
Personal opinion, if they left the factory with them leave them on.

Either anodised aluminium or polished alloy with a protective coating of clear anodising.

^ i think you got it right previously , stainless.
well at least they are stainless on a uc ?

If it was a LH SLR i would say leave them on.
But it's a LX so do whatever you want. Your car your call.
BTW: LH window trims (stainless) & LX/UC (anodised alloy) side mouldings are not the same.

^ not the same shape or same material ? , agree the shape is different but the stainless trim on the 78 uc that has been sittin in the trees (6 years) that produce acid can still be just wiped over with a damp cloth and it will "shine up ok" , would an anodized ally do that ?

I'm not sure if stainless would even do that, lol. j/k.
It depends on the acid involved and the alloy or steel involved. Stainless steel can indeed stain or corrode depending on what you hit it with.

I wrestled with the same question when doing mine.
I actually like the chrome trim so kept is everywhere. Even around the tail lights.
I have not found it hard to take care of.
Mine is only an SL. It is the way i had it in the 80's and that mattered to me.

I think the trim looks good , they were made to have it for some reason , but each to their own , the bits around the tail lights are an extruded ally that they somehow managed to bend into shape , for some reason the acid lol only took the protective layer off the ally and caused a bit white powder (ally oxide) that can be re-polished and recoated.
Just not sure on how a black car would look with black blackouts around the area where the trim goes ?

I like it, it goes nicely with the side mirror arm, door handles, trim around the windscreen, grille, headlights, bumper bar and mags. Perhaps on a car with coloured bumpers and handles it's more suitable not to have it.

Looks good to me.

To me they both look good and if it's a choice you really can't decide between it's probably best to go with how it came from factory; trends come and go (de-chroming and de-badging was a short-lived craze in the 80's) but the factory look will always have fans.
