Guys i am about to get my diff made up.

Going Skyline R31 Borg Warner but getting new brackets, new billet axles and having it shortened mainly to rotate the discs for the brakes into the correct position as they are originally rotated and sit very high.

I know standard LX torana diff length is 1440mm face to face.

But i notice some people get them made slightly shorter.

Obviously if they have tubbed their car or anything this is a no brainer, but does getting them slightly shortened without changing anything else create more room for back space on the rear wheels or just create issues in terms of things fouling?

Suggestions on ideal length? Going flares but wont be tubbed or anything like that.(Flares make no difference to diff width as i am aware as they are more for outside offset not inside of the wheels)

My gut feeling was just to get mine made 1440mm but wanted to check on opinions first.

As you said your fitting flairs so i would say 1440mm as you would want to fill up the flairs with the tyre/rim

Depends how much dish you want to have on your wheels. Are you a convo pro 3 and 3/8" or 5"" backspace kind of guy?
You can go about an inch shorter each side before you start to run into the shock.

The idea of using the Skyline diff is so you don't have to shorten it, as soon as you start doing that you run into more issues with brake caliper clearance, particularly to the lower shock mount.

I would say it depends more on what width wheels you intend to use, in an 8" or 9" the usual backspacing for HQ/Chev stud pattern will generally work fine with the R31 width and flares. If you're going 10" or wider you may want to lose around an inch each side to fit common off the shelf wheels.

I have 17x 10 inch wheels on my 4 door which has a standard width diff and flares with no problems.
Most likely going 18x10 on the rear of this hatch with flares so I'm thinking standard width will be fine.
My diff guy however has told me the skyline brakes are in the wrong place and need to be rotated into
the correct position (my aim is to run wilwood brakes all round) To do this the diff needs to be cut and
so I assumed it was worth taking it back to 1440 as the skyline is about 20mm wider.
Just didn't realise the brakes were in the different position.
More money unfortunately.
With old brackets removed, new brackets welded on, new billet axles with HQ stud pattern and the shortening
I'm starting to wonder if it's worth it. Getting up towards $2000 to get this work done to a diff I've supplied.
$4500 gets me a brand new 9 inch with Wilwood brakes on it from CRS.
Not sure if I should just go that way.

Yeah Brett i am more and more leaning that way. By the time i get this one done up properly and put the Wilwood brakes on it ill be up for $3500 for a Borg Warner with a standard center. $1000 more i end up with a far superior diff.

And you can sell the old diff for some money back! And also with a 6 speed you need 3.7's minimum, 3.9s best  with tall overdrive.

I spoke to CRS this afternoon and it seems like 3.9s with the TR6060 and 18 inch wheels is the way to go.
Just gotta go find $4500 plus postage somewhere ha ha
It does seem like a much wiser way to go.

I have the magnum 6 speed behind a LS motor 3.9s gears and 10x18 inch wheels ......car is tubbed

i have no idea how this set up with perform as car is not running yet

Best advice is put your wheels under the car and measure in between hub face to hub face and that is your out side diff length

Yeah thanks Big Kev. How far is your car off from being on the road so you'll know how successful that combo will be?
