Hi Gtr freak,

I went to John Gong's,place with another forum member back in 2011,one weekend to pick up a few nick nacks off him.

He showed us the NK block on a engine stand.

Never ever seen one before.

They do exist and there out there.

Regards John.

Hi Albert,

Was a genuine block, with a cast number too match.

Just jealous because, you never seen one in the flesh or a photo of one either.

Your being a little rude I think. If I had one I would refuse to show you a picture.

Any chance of a better pattern/cast date image? Reason I ask is the date format should lead with the letter in 1971 shouldn’t it?

I just read back further in the thread and it looks like 6cyl changed in the middle of 1971 with the pattern/cast date. V8 was much later than that and what I'm used to.

There's an ND block on Facebook at the moment that is supposed to have a 13H 1 casting date

It is probably obvious - 173 and 202 were new for HQ with significant changes to the patterns so the pattern/cast date format was changed with volume HQ engine production either late June or early July 1971. 253 and 308 didn't change much so they seem to have stayed with the letter (month) leading well into 1973.

It would be interesting to find one of the really early 173 or 202 from HQ's built during restricted production to see if they had the DDMMY date form on them or if they had the older format. Clearly the format change is sometime around 1/7/71 give or take a few days but there were some HQ completed during April and May 1971 with heaps more during June. I'm talking about numbers I can see like QL1044, QD1001, QD1034 etc. GMH may just have made a few 173 and 202 patterns for early HQ (lots were V8 too), and made (or modified) more as they stopped building 161 and 186.
