Sorry, I should've answered this in the other thread...

They're actually neither alloy or chrome, they're stainless steel with a clear coating to keep them shiny.

If you scrub them too hard you'll wear through the clear coating and they look like crap (all patchy), if that happens you can either keep going and remove all of the clear coating then polish the stainless steel beneath, but then it won't hold it's shine for very long and you'll find you need to constantly re-polish them.

Or I believe you can get them re-coated? There was a thread around here somewhere about someone getting it done, but for some reason this forum's history now only goes back six months (?) so I can't find it?

Hatch trims are aluminium with anodised coating.  I have cut and bent plenty of these to make room for the mirror on the LHS.

For a light polish, you just use mothers or autosol or any other metal polish.

If they are scratches you can actually feel with a finger nail, you would need to remove the anodising, polish and re-anodise to remove the scratches.

Pretty time consuming and very thin aluminium to play with so a lot of time and patience.

I have hand sanded 1 trim as I was going to go bare polished aluminium but that took me absolutely ages and I gave up.

Drano removes anodising but is also very aggressive on aluminium.  I was planning on doing a test to remove the anoding chemically and then clean to see how I go but I have only 1 spare set that I don't want to stuff up so I haven't been game.  I really need a test bunny to try it on.

When ever I have seen anoding redone after chemical removal the result was crap - they need to be hand polished after anodising is removed chemically.
