Hi all.
Just some advice please. My friend had his M20 gearbox fitted to his LJ but the bloke forgot to fit the sandwich plate that sits on top of the red 6 between motor and gearbox.
My question is can the gearbox be unbolted and cross member removed that will allow clearance for fitment or does the box need to be removed altogether?
just hoping.....
Cheers.

Box will need 90% removing but not totally out of the car?

Should be able to get it without taking the shifter off for instance.

Ok thanks Bomber. He has installed the console and clutch too so I will need to remove the cable.

Theoretically you only have to get the box back far enough to get it off the dowels......

So starter out bellhousing bolts out and try from there?

Im thinking the x member and tailshaft will also have to be dropped. Clutch depends on the style he is running.

Pretty sure I have done this before but was easy ten years ago so my memory is clouded. Loosen the centre bolts on the cross member. Remove starter motor. Remove bell housing bolts, with big blade flathead screwdrivers lever between the block and bell housing and separate only basically the thickness of sandwich plate. It should stay on the dowels. Cut the bottom out of each side of the sandwich plate up to the holes that the dowels slip through. It should then slide down in place from the top. Put the bell housing bolts back in and do up to pull the bellhousing back onto the block. I think?

like what adam said above ^^^ you have to cut the bottom of the dowels holes because the flywheel is so close to the block

Don't stress. It's only two small cuts under either side to remove the metal the width of the dowel holes. No biggy, and will effect nothing. Much easier than pulling the box, bellhousing, clutch and flywheel. Let us know how you go....
