Hi Guys,

I'm after a gearbox to go behind my LS3 with around 580 hp in my LX hatch.

What should I be looking at? I won't be doing any track work or drag racing.

Regards.

Budget?

T56 is good for about 700hp, came from factory in the viper only difference is a larger output shaft, guts are the same.

Otherwise go TR6060, that is if you want a manual..

The TR6060 was also used in the Viper, but not all TR6060's were created equal (power ratings-wise)...

Tremec_TR6060_ratios.jpg

Most of the Commodores here in Australia are the "A" ratio package, HSV vehicles mostly got the "C" package, and IIRC, Corvette got the "E" and  Viper got the "F" package (much closer ratios, much higher torque ratings). Several frauds also got the TR6060.

There is an after-market version of the TR6060 available called the T56 Magnum, which comes in two different ratio packages...

Tremec_T56_Magnum.jpg

The T56 Magnum is generally regarded as a little stronger again than the generic TR6060, but if that still won't do, there are a couple of companies around that are offering several levels of mods to beef-up these new transmissions, for example:

Tick Performance have a "Super Magnum" package, which they say will "safely support OVER 900RWTQ - guaranteed!"

and

RPM Transmissions do pretty-much the same thing (except they call it a "Magnum Level VII").

Both are roughly US$1700 on top of the new T56 Magnum last time I checked?

As above, assuming you mean a manual transmission, and assuming "money is no object" of course (better to spend a little extra on the first transmission than a lot extra on a second)!

Thanks for the responses.

Sorry Andrew, but the reason I posted a new thread is that I'm not very good with computers and I couldn't find my original post when I went back to the forum, so I started another thread.

The only reason I found this thread is because you posted a link, thanks.

I haven't ordered the LS3 yet, but the motor I've seen has 580 hp. I think they call it a long motor.

When I wrote the other thread I couldn't remember how much hp it had.

I after a manual and I'm looking at a Tremec TKO 600 5 speed. Can anyone tell me if the tunnel needs to be altered to run this box?

Thanks for all the advice.

Regards.

I have a TKO600 behind a 308, places that sell conversions tell you that no tunnel alterations are required but that gives crummy driveline angles with vibrations etc. You need to alter it to do it properly. In hindsight due to the square shape of the TKO a T56 would have fit just as easily but I'm happy enough with it.

I managed to just barely keep it inside the console:

Agree with 76lxhatch, to do it properly tunnel mods are required, most gearboxes will require tunnel mods to a torana, they are full of shit or rough if they say otherwise

Thanks for the feedback guys,

Mal Wood has sent me pictures of a TKO600 behind an LS3 with no tunnel modifications but I have a feeling that is wishful thinking.

I'm the same as 76lxhatch, it's really important the centre console goes back without cutting the hell out of it.

Is it worth looking at the superT10 for the Torana?

Regards.

The Super T10 will need modified linkages and shifter to keep it inside the tunnel, otherwise you're back to issues with the console if you use an A9X style blister.

If your not hard on the t10 it can survive behind an LS3 but you would be above what it is rates for.
Early holdens are a shit, not just torana's they just didnt put decent sized trans tunnels in them.

Thanks guys,

It's getting a little bit to hard at the moment.

I'll keep looking but the TKO 600 seems to be the one.

Regards.

I have a TKO in the hatch and a T56 Magnum in the SLR, The t56 fits better in the tunnel  than the TKO. If I ever take the box out of the hatch I will gladly put a Magnum box in its, much better than the TKO in many ways.

Magnum is also a better shifting box, the TKO's don't like being rushed into 3rd.

^ Interesting that, I've seen so many comments on that exact problem on the web. But mine goes into third easy (slam it in as fast as you like bearing in mind its still a synchro shift), its the 1-2 shift that I find most difficult to get right in a hurry. Possibly a result of changes to improve the issue?

I got my TKO600 from the promotion in the states with their "ensure shift" mods because of what I had read about the 3rd gear hitting a wall issue.
Mine (did) go into the 3rd gear gate ok but then the synchro didn't like 7000+rpm 😩😩
They are a heavy box (inertia wise) & even TREMEC say not to shift over 6200rpm

I have since put carbon fibre lined syncros in but haven't driven it much to really test it!

Really wish I had gone the faceplate option on 2-3-4

TKO is a bit like driving a truck, magnum is like driving a M3. Magnum is also rated at 700hp TKO 600. The TKO Isn't a bad shifter its just the magnum is much better. And the ratio are brilliant for my application.

Ljrb30, i fitted the carbon syncros to my tko, def improved the shift, dont use them on 1st gear as it didnt last long.
Still had issues tho shifting at 7000, was an improvement tho.
Have since switched to dog box, dont recommend it for street driving, awesome for racing.

Put a TKO 600 in my brothers HG Monaro, no way you could rush 3rd gear, would crunch or not go in. Spoke to Mall Wood and he said try his shifter, did and almost fixed the problem, but no where as sweet as the magnum box for gear changes.

Ive put them on all gears but have only driven normally to give it all a chance to settle before really thrashing it. Havent had time or motivation to do much with it since i put the syncros in 8-10 months ago

Car is no longer regoed so it only see the drag strip or the rare circuit day.

Did you do the dog box job on the TKO or swap  to a different box?

I think id be happy with a dog set up on 2-3-4 cose it usually gets driven hard :spoton:

My box also came with a Pro5.0 shifter & i made a short stick for it.

But i think i will add a couple of inches to it!

Maybe i should have gone the Magnum but was trying to find something to fit the tunnel!

Still had to cut the top of the tunnel & raise it !

When i screwed first, i was been hard BUT did the same thing with the brass many times before without an issue.
I was going back to first for a really! Tight hair pin while doing recce for a targa event.

I changed out the whole gearbox, it feels a little violent the way you need to shift, no clutch on upshift or downshift, if you get the revs right.
It was prob the best option long term for me and something came up at the right time.

I like to actually have long shift handle so small amount of hand movement between steering wheel and shifter, so it doesnt become a thought, no reaching for something its right there.

I raised my tunnel for the tko also when i fitted it, changed the crossmember too from what i was sold.

If this box gives me the shits again its goin to be made a dog!!

I made my short stick so i didnt have to look for it also

But will lengthen it to make it easier to shift. Currently its probably barely 150mm long
