Fuels, V-Power quality?

Hi Everyone!

 

  I usually tank up with VPower at the Lygon st Shell station, but my last tank there resulted in pinging. Which was disappointing.

 

  Just wondering does anyone else find that fuels fluctuate in quality between pumps at the same pump station?

 

  Should I go down the path of adding octane boosters? Or try BP's 98 offering?

Interesting u say pinging from fuel.

I always use BP and have some pinging also..?? Am waiting to take it to the dyno to see how all my timings are etc only as I can't be botherd changing distibutor weights etc.

I once blamed fuel for pinging, I found that gradual oil/carbon deposits in the combustion chamber was the real cause. Oil was getting drawn in through the inlet manifold and causing the problem.... Just a thought as I was retarding timing to compensate until I found the cause.

You never put Shell fuel in a motorcycle so why put in your car.

I have found over the years that if ever a fuel was going to cause pinging...it is always..shell.

 

No idea why or how, as you'd have to imagine it would be tested pretty well before release into the truck at the definery?.......maybe they occasionally have a bad batch, and just trickle it into the good batches to get rid of it?

I avoid Shell fuel like the plague, every time I've had to use it over the years I've regretted it... pinging, surging, bad economy, frankly I don't know how the company is still in business, obviously most users are oblivious to what their car is doing, or just don't know any better? Or maybe I've just been unlucky enough to get a bad batch EVERY TIME?

 

These days I will drive out of my way to use BP Ultimate, or Caltex 98 in a pinch.

 

Also, if your car sits around between drives for any length of time you should stay clear of any ethanol content if possible, unless you're able to drain and flush the system with straight petrol before storage. Ethanol is hygroscopic (meaning it absorbs moisture), which is not that big a problem unless the fuel sits around for any length of time, then the moisture causes the ethanol to separate from the fuel it was suspended in, making it settle to the bottom of the tank with the petrol floating on top.

Thanks for the posts everyone.

 

Agree most users would be oblivious as the engine management would compensate for crap fuel.

 

My engine is clean from deposits so it's not detonating for that reason.

 

Think I'll try BP ultimate and see how I go.

 

Does anyone know if the fuel is all shipped as 98 to the station or is it up to the guys at the pump station to put in the additives?

Are you guys all running close to the ragged edge tuning wise? Maybe I've been lucky but I haven't had a problem with any of the 98 octane fuel offerings in the moderns or the old beasts.

Sensor who? Knock sensor...

Maybe back off the timing or add an octane booster and see how that goes, also ambient temperature and altitude plays a role in detonation too.

Other fuels all good.

Shell   =  ping. Not every time, but certainly a long term trend.

Maybe its the nitrogen detergent additive they put into the V-Power that is causing the pinging.

It seems to depend on where you live, in some regions they swear by BP, others by Caltex, etc. It's as if different refineries from the same brand around the country are putting out different product.
