Hi all,

First time poster, long time reader. I am seeking some specific info on the supra conversion into an LX hatch. I have searched the forums/posts and this one specifically has the most info

http://www.gmh-toran...to-lx/?hl=supra

I have the opportunity to buy a fresh 308 turbo pattern (VT prefix) with supra gearbox and tailshaft yoke all assembled at fair money. This gives me opportunity to upgrade from the existing tired 253 with m20. I just need some guidance from those who have done it if possible. The hatch is original and i dont want to be cutting tunnels, essentially everything I do needs to be able to be undone. This post talks about

- 3 different gearshifter positions for the supra box, i cant find any more info on this. Does anyone know how to identify this or have measurements?

- what work if any has to be done with regards to the gearbox cross mount to get he supra box secured, any modification required or specialised brackets?

- there was mentions of HQ engine mounts which moves the motor slightly? to asssit with install, is this forward or backwards?

- has anyone run the supra setup on the original clutch cable, i realise i will have to make or mod a new bracket but just curious to know whether i need to shft to hydraulic master cylinder

Is there any traps i should be aware of or recommendations for things to keep in mind

Thanks!!

There are more than 3 different shifter positions, you want one of the rearmost ones where the ball at the base of the stick actually hangs out behind the area where it bolts to the casing (without actually being a linkage operated remote shifter).

Don't buy a cheap aftermarket cross member, they are flimsy and the whole lot bounces around. Its relatively simple to make one that will bolt to the original holes in the chassis rails (there are multiple options). You will need to re-route the exhaust around the tail housing rather than under it, and the cross member should provide space for the exhaust if you want good ground clearance.

Lots of threads on the HQ mounts, they sit the engine a small amount lower and further back.

Most of the conversion bell housings are set up to use a factory Holden clutch release, which means you can either use that or any further conversion items designed for use with factory Holden box. You'll need to check what you've got.

If you want any chance of avoiding driveline vibrations you'll need to cut a little from the tunnel in the shifter area.

If you want to go fast you'll break it eventually.

Thanks for the info 76lx hatch, here are some photos of the box in question.

The measurment from the front of the bell housing to the centre line of the gear shifter when in nuetral is 720mm. Does that reference to anythng you have come across?

The shifter is about as far rearward as you will find, should fit OK in a Torana.

Bell housing is set up for full cable style clutch release.

Also forgot to mention the stick comes out in the same spot as the aussie 4 speed so no need to cut or modify anything which is what i didn't want to do...

The guy that did mine, Con from Diff Technics went with the CRS kit. He's had a lot of issues with Dellows components over the years and won't go near them.

Unfortunately that CRS cross member will also need a bit of work if you want the box to sit still. For anyone starting from scratch I'd recommend making your own.

Just needs some added strength however you prefer to go about it, to stop it from flexing so much

Cheers. Would you know where it needs strengthening, along the roll axis or pitch axis?

Roll I guess but its not so much a twisting movement as it just bends along its length even without rotational torque. Sit it between two blocks of wood and stand in the middle, its like being on a trampoline. You can watch the shifter bobbing up and down as you drive down the road, some flex is OK but I don't like it moving an inch over every small bump.

I've definitely noticed that from the corner of my eye when it was first installed, I had to do a few double takes to see where & how it's happening but couldn't actually spot it having to keep my eyes on the road. I guess I'm used to it now.
