I pulled this motor improvements (speco) solid camshaft out of an engine and tracked down the specs for it but am unsure of what to make of it. Basically I want to know what kind of engine this camshaft would suit, how aggressive it is and what you guys think of the grind. Ultimately it would be great to put into my own engine but no point if its just the plain wrong grind for my set up and what I want.

The engine it came out of was a 202 with Xu1 head, starfire rods that apparently ran triple webers. Rumored it was a speedway engine at some point but really don't know.

Honestly i'm pretty knew to camshafts but it seems to me that it doesn't have much lift comparative to the duration?

Any help appreciated, so thanks heaps guys :)

I'm no expert either but i have a few camshaft catalogues, etc. That spec is close to a Camtech CT35 608 (a). Can be seen online here:- https://www.camtechc...149202_sol.html

Description reads - Street / strip & club circuit racing. Rough idle. Strong mid range and top end. Min comp ratio 10:1. Best with 3.7:1+ diff ratio.
RPM RANGE 2800-6500

Hope this helps.

What are you looking for? How much HP are you looking for at the fly? Do you want hydraulic or solid cam?

That cam would be fine on the street, its not overly aggressive at all (for a holden 6). its an old style grind- camtech, as well as other companies will be able to advise much better cams (if performance is what you are after). If you are after max performance, and have a good breathing package, there are much better cams out there.

However, this cam should produce a relatively good idle, due to relatively low overlap. I would think this cam would work better in a 12 port head than the 9 port head. 9 port heads when ported can have pretty ordinary air speed- so tighter centres can help improve the scavenging signal in the port, and gets the port sped up at low lifts (the overlap can give the port a kick in the guts to start moving air).

I really like the look of camtech CT35 637-108 (a)- 250@50 duration on 108 centres. I quite like the look of this cam- it will have a degree of chop in the idle but it should be relatively smooth.

and CT35 629A-106 (a) 256@50 duration on 106 centres.

The tighter centres like 106 will make the idle quality suffer, and the car will not like to be off the cam, but when it comes on the cam it will work well. This is not for a daily driver though.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I'd be running 161 high comp head hsd fullys 6 with triple su 1 3/4. I'd like 200hp but thats really just throwing numbers around (with a good dose of dreaming). Ultimately I just wanna try building something (haven't before) and have some fun with it.
Thinking that I'd be better off getting a newer performance cam... but the one I have is just lying around and not going to cost anything to use haha
Got time to think about it but thinking I will just put the speco cam in the engine. Can always change it later and would I'd be very interested to see the performance gains (or loss)
Thanks for the help

Hi mate,
