Hi Everyone,

I'm in the process of restoring my LC GTR (kashmir white). Its got matching tags with the 2600s engine. I'm trying to get it back to original (or as close to) and was wondering what peoples thoughts were in regards to which black paint to use on the engine bay, boot space, interior and under chassis? My spray painter is thinking that it might look better to have everything gloss black to match the exterior blackouts and strips, especially when you open the bonnet etc. He also mentioned that the gloss has better UV protection, however not that much of a concern. Should I keep it satin 60% gloss level black. What is the correct paint code for this and what parts of the car should I be doing the satin black?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

If going original, satin black in engine bay all day everyday. Boot area will vary Brisbane or Adelaide car? If Adelaide blue, black, grey colour at about 60% gloss. Best too match to what's there already if original. Midnight black is the best black match.

Hi mate,

I have a pretty original LC that has the factory type satin in the engine bay ( almost matte after 40 something years)

and

A LJ that is painted gloss in the engine bay.

The gloss looks nicer....but it just doesnt fit the originality vibe if thats what you are after........

i'd go the factory look....but up to you.

It's a semi gloss, not a satin. & yes if you're chasing originality the gloss black doesn't look right. You're spray painters going to have to mix up the colours & label them before he strips it if it's not already done. What plant was the car made at ?

The factory over spray in my boot is grey but the main colour of the boot looks black.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. The painter is looking at doing the black next week. It's an Adelaide built car 10/70. Just trying to work out all blackout areas, engine bay and boot areas. So midnight black at 60% gloss should be as close to original? Wouldn't happen to know the paint code just so I get it spot on? Also are the drip rails (I.e. Under the stainless trim), to be done the car colour white or part of the blackout around windows? Cheers

Isn't there an actual colour called Gmh black?

That's what I asked for when I did my engine bay and boot but not sure what the painter actually got?

For the boot mix 300ml of black with 50ml of white and that's very close to the original boot and engine bay colour of my 73 Adelaide car.

A Lot of engine bays and boot areas where painted with paint that was just a mix of all the left overs chucked into one pot,  the usual colour was mostly a black or variation of it, but it would vary depending on what colours where going through the production line at the time

This may be a dumb question but surely they didn't paint the engine bay will all the parts already in it? Unless they did then I can't see how this is the original colour.

Warrigal & tuxedo became gmh jet black only. The heater box was not painted around like that Anthony in any torana I've ever seen.

I'd be inclined to go with what James has suggested here. Make sure that you get it done in a semi gloss,
Protec can do the semi quite easy as an example.

The slops mix is a load of bullshit & i wish people would stop believing it.

Has anyone else got this grey colour in their engine bay or just in the boots.

When I had my heater box out there was no stencilling like shown in Anthony's photos and that is original paint in that area on mine.

The only way that would possibly work is to put only black in it & all of the same gloss levels. I did a trade in it Gene. Any "automotive" trade qualified intelligent spray painter would agree. Gmh did not mix there own paint it was a buy in actually, I wasn't having a go at you, just that it's not how it goes, slops in a panel shop is the last bit of paint in your gun no matter what, metalic, solid, any colour, that doesn't make reasonably consistent colours.

Hi James, I've seen some Adelaide cars grey in the engine bay & boot, black in engine bay & grey in the boot & black in both. Slightly different colour to the brisbane engine bay. & 73 brisbane slightly lighter than 72 brisbane engine bay & boot area. I would use the spectrometer on your area under the heater box if you can, you need roughly 60mm diameter, flat edge & not scratched to get the most accurate mix. PM me your mobile number mate, i can talk about it more with you if you like, Gary.

No, my Brissy LJ was not like that when I pulled the heater out back in '87.

I have never seen a lc or lj like that ever, clearly a repaint. my brisbane was all black, was still factory under the heater before it was blasted.

So it would appear Crabba is making stuff up as he goes along?

I never would have imagined that happening.
