One of the guys at work offered to weld up the brackets for me. So they are done. Not pretty but they won't be seen.
Im getting married in a couple of weeks so not much has been happening.
Slowly collecting extra bits and pieces for the interior.
It has all seemed to snowball has they do.
I'll be doing the roof lining eventually but for now whike everything is out it will get a couple coats of vinyl paint.
Sound deadening will be going down.
The last owner butchered the lower dash section to fit a CD play. So i got a repair panel for it but once i removed the unit I realised they had cut out the silver edge too. Got to try find another lower section not too.

If you find one with an uncut coin tray, I will swap you for one with a radio hole. :)

Will do. I dont have the funds to pay for an uncut one.
Id be happy with any colour with a cut one aslong as the silver line is still there. I'll just fit the replacement panel to it.

Buy some epoxy and apply some creative plastering, a bit of paint and you'd never know

Got the mounting plates all painted up and fitted today.
All went pretty well and is straight forward to do.
After the wefding I'll get the front mount tunnel welded.
Then its back into it i hope.
Did a list up today too. There is a lot on it but once i get going again it shouldnt take too long.... famous last words.

I am literally about to do this in my car aswell.
I was planning of doing from underneath but I may do it this way too it's been good seeing the way you have done it.
Nice work.
Are you going to spot weld the bracket in from ontop aswell though?

Hey mate. The rear seat mount is easy. Its is done from underneath. I'll put a pic up. Once i get under the car I'll seal the edges with morw sikalfex then coat in stone guard. Not going to spot weld it in spot. It wont be going anywhere when I'm done and i dont have a welder or the knowhow. Getting someone else to weld the rest for me. b1888f83f005998d25d5a63eb52889c1.jpg

Cheers for the pic, the back one is straight forward, It was just the front one I was up on the air how/Where to tackle it from because of it being in the box section.
Seeing as though you still have to weld up the floor patch it wouldn't take much to do a few plug welds to the bracket as well.
You could have pre drilled some holes ready for the plug welds.
You could prob still drill out some holes for plug welding.
Does it have to be engineered seeing as though our cars didn't come with the bucket seats?

I could do but im not going to bother. I'm not sure about the engineering side of it. Some states might need it done. If it is ever an issue they can see the rear one from underneath. The standard plates are only 1.6mm thick i think and iv used 3mm flat bar.

It's a bit of a grey area as bucket seats were a factory option for that model, however it boils down to altering the seating capacity as indicated by the compliance plate, so yes.

Not gray at all. If it’s a factory option (and you do it with factory bits) it is clearly ok.

Replicating the factory option with non factory bits has never needed engineering when I have asked.

I'm not sure on W.A regulations but on the East coast a blue plate is required because you are changing the seating capacity .

No certifying engineer would pass that seat mount , & no engineer should !

The corners should be radiused 25mm & ALL edges should be radiused also. This is to prevent the plate tearing the floor during an impact .

Depending on the certifier you may also need to fully weld the nut. This is to stop moisture getting in & rusting the welds <sic> out from the inside .

Sikaflex is not a substitute for welding.

As I alluded to earlier, bench seat cars have "SEATING CAP. 6" on the Compliance Plate.

If you change to bucket seats the car no longer has 6 seating positions (assuming you also fit a centre console), therefore it no longer complies and requires an engineer to sign-off on the altered seating capacity.

EDIT: DOH! Col beat me to it.

But is it safe?

Or are you just trying to flex your knowledge?

If you're using a standard Torana front seat, for example, I am quite confident that the spot welds on the seat frame or the mounts on the seat frame will fail before that load spreading plate tears through the floor.

I can see a few ways to make this plate solution a stronger one, of course. But "over engineering" is not engineering, and it's particularly pointless if it is not the weakest link anyway.

Also, a factory Torana bench seat car was considered adequately safe at the time (eg. in an accident where someone runs up your arse) with the mass of 3x adults across the front seat, using only four mounts in total.
This car will have 1x adult on each seat, each seat connected to the floor with four mounts.

No structural advantage in welding the plates as the force is compressive. All it would do is potentially weaken the floor.

I agree corners need to be radiused in theory, but doubt very much it will cause issue. Very unlikely to contribute to injury or damage in event of an accident so wouldn't bother getting it complianced unless you are doing more significant mods.

Im not sure that would pass a pit inspection over here in W.A. they are pretty strict
ffs you need a mod plate for extractors here

It’s the same as converting a factory 6 cylinder LH/LX to V8 using factory bits. This has never needed engineer sign off in Victoria.

They have the common sense to ignore that the car is now “different” to delivery and recognise it is a reasonable change. No one cares what’s on the build plates.

You know what else didn’t need engineering sign off every time I asked Vicroads?

9 inch diff or gearbox conversions.

Now if only we had SA owner certified modification approval and their ability to re register their same owner expired registration cars we would be perfect!

Gene, you are welcome In Mexico any time you want to make the move!

Thank you for all your im put everyone. I will look into it all.
The car has already had the seating complicity changed when the racing seats were put in they were done dodgy.

Sound deadening all down. And a few bit and pieces tidied up.
Seat mounts all modified and welded up.
Next on the list the hood ligning. For the time being I'll just be spraying it with VHT vinyl dye. When I have funds to pull the screens out and fix the plenum I'll put a new hood ligning in. 3b41f298ab2a3efd0ee572242d6690a5.jpgc650526c3c9b40e024813012892e7d8f.jpgab7255bd00ac6d7fdd5bf438278dea6f.jpg

The VHT stuff works very well. Provided the lining is clean and tidy you’ll get a result you can easily live with for some time.

Got the hood lining done with VHT vinyl dye. Went with satin black.
Came up a treat.
Lots of taping up makes it easier.
Used drop down painters sheets. Made life a lot easier.

Also got the pastel shelf covered in a black grainy vinyl. Very happy with how it turn out too.
Next on the list is to cover the B pillars and use the vinyl dye on the pinch weld trims aroimd the doors and it's ready to put back together.

That roof lining has come up a treat.  I have heard of brown factory carpet being painted black with it as well.
