All

So, recently I purchased a VTII GTS. Great car that went really well. Handles great and stops brilliantly.
However, when I started it I was getting a puff of smoke that we identified as unburnt fuel. So I decided to check the injectors.
Sent them to be cleaned and turns out that one is not so good, letting too much fuel through.
So I thought I would check the throttle body - missing a bolt and loose.
Check the intake manifold - two seals are stuffed and one bolt is snapped.
I guess the last person to work on the car really didnt care too much.
Checked the plugs and a couple of them didnt look like they had ever been changed.

So I made a decision. If this is what it is like so far, the engine has to come out.

So, we pulled the engine and learned a few things.
When you put in new springs, they need to have the right cap, otherwise the spring bottoms out and damages the top of the valve. Ask me how I learned that . . .
Somebody had put pushrod guides in, but left the standard pushrods in and they were badly worn.
Then we profiled the cam. It would be great in a turbo car, but not so much in a normally aspirated car . . .

So I thought, bugger it. Do it once, do it right.

I hadnt seen a build thread so I thought I would do one. Maybe somebody out there is thinking about doing this and if this helps them, great!

The first of the bits have turned up.
Carillo forged pistons, Lunati rods, Mellings Oil pump with some other bits.
The result will be a solid engine that I can drive how I like without worrying.

We measured the bores and they are within 2 thou of each other, so the block is being bored to 5 thou over. The pistons are 5 thou over pistons. The best part is the pistons have valve relief so the tolerance between valve and piston will also be better.
The bottom end is being balanced, along with new bearings all through.
In the meantime, I sent the cam to Camtech and they profiled it. It is being ground to different specs that I will pop here shortly.

I will update as I go along.

Some more progress today.
The engine guy uses a machined plate for the LS to make sure the block maintains stability while it is being machined.

The C4B's are a great engine but unfortunately the cams are known to fail in them around 100,000kms.  Probably a good thing you are doing the whole engine.

By the wayy, the VT11 GTS is one of my favourite cars and will be collectable one day I reckon...

Keep us posted with your build :)

Some more progress

Firstly we cleaned the threads out of the block

New Camtech cam

After chemically cleaning the block, the oil galleries were tapped and plugged with grub screws instead of the plastic thingies normally used.

The whole bottom end, was also balanced.

The Lunati rods were checked to ensure they were the right size

After the Carillo forged pistons and Lunati rods were joined and balanced, they were inserted into the block

and the bottom end is assembled with the polished and balanced crank. I also chose to use a stud kit rather than bolts for the bottom end

IMG_6238_zpslinxeg5e.jpg

and the crank end float was checked

the new cam bearings were replaced

and the cam was lubed and inserted into the block as well as the bottom end bearings were trial fitted

Excellent Glenn, this engine will be a tuff engine after that, some really good parts in there. Heaps of potential in the c4b i think, be interesting to see how the Callaway heads flow for evenness. Should make around 425 rwhp i reckon. Gary
